Villas Almost 3,000 years ago, people started farming close to a city called Rome in Italy. During the Earlier times most farmers only made enough food to live on and sold any extra stuff. Grain was harvested by hand until the 1 st century A.D. a harvesting machine was invented later on Start of farming

Farming difficulties Farming was important but it had many difficulties. A farmer must be careful where he planted his crops. Bad weather patterns and unfertile soil could come if he wasn’t careful. Farms were also often attacked by invaders.

Rich farmers could have many different types of crops and animals Animals such as sheep, pigs, bees, pigeons, chickens, geese, oxen, goats, and they rarely had horses. They could plant crops such grapes, lettuce, carrots, radishes, beans, pears, apples, figs, and olives.

Large farm estates were called villas. Each one had a manager and a house keeper, who were both slaves They were responsible for the operation of the farm, and the supervising of the slaves.
