Work, Energy and Power. Energy: Energy can neither be created nor destroyed. It comes in many forms: Kinetic Potential (gravitational, chemical, elastic)
 Energy is the ability to do work or cause change.  When work is done energy is transferred to the object.  The unit for energy is the JOULE.
Work and Energy 1.What is work? 2.What is energy? 3.What does horsepower and torque of an engine tell you about a car?
WHAT IS ENERGY? Notes:.  Science is mostly about matter and energy. We say that matter is anything that has mass and takes up space. That is easy to.
Potential Energy Stored energy due to the relative position of an object In the field of a field force (i.e., gravity, electrostatic, magnetic) In relation.
Work and Energy. What is WORK? Work is equal to the amount of force it takes for an object to move a distance. Formula: Work = Force X Distance W = F.

Presentation transcript:

Gravitational Potential Energy is… – “stored energy” – Stored energy due to work done against gravity

Formula for GPE Gravitational Potential Energy = mass x height x acceleration due to gravity GPE = m x g x h Units!! GPE = m x g x h (J)(kg)(m/s 2 )(m) Joules

Kinetic Energy is… – energy due to motion – If an object is motionless Velocity = zerov = 0then… Kinetic Energy = zeroKE = 0

Formula for KE Kinetic Energy = ½ x mass x velcoity 2 KE = ½ x m x v 2 Units!! KE= ½ m x v 2 (J)(kg)(m/s) Joules

Conservation of Energy Energy CANNOT BE CREATED OR DESTROYED Energy only transforms from on form to the other. Many times, energy is “lost” but really it transforms due to Friction Friction causes Thermal Energy – or Heat !! Friction can also cause Sound – which is another form of Energy
