World Breastfeeding Trends Initiative Indicator: Mother Support Farahdibha Tenrilemba Indonesia Breastfeeding Mothers’ Association

Gaps detected for Mother Support & Community Outreach from 2009 assessment Today there are (around) 3000 counselors trained to support breastfeeding mother and baby, yet only few implemented good counseling and listening skills, with limited outreach through out the nations.

Gaps detected for Mother Support 1. Pregnant women have limited access to community- based support systems and services on IYCF 2. Pregnant & breastfeeding women have limited access to support for IYCF, because health facilities (especially medical professions organizations) work closely with special formula for pregnant & breastfeeding mothers owned by formula company whom claiming they support breastfeeding 3. IYCF support services (e.g Puskesmas, Posyandu) have national coverage, yet still lack of support (such as capacity from human resources)

(Cont..) Gaps 4. The community-based support services have not spread and known widely to implement IYCF program for pregnant and breastfeeding woman 5. Only few Community-based volunteers and health workers have possessed correct information on IYCF 6. Have not reached all/wider community stages, because lack of resources (e.g: funding, human resources, capacity and tools) 7. Rarely hospitals do the 10 th steps where they have to work together with mother support group

Recommendations for Mother Support & Community Outreach 1. Training breastfeeding motivator – a voluntary peer from community itself (local understanding and language), therefore peer-counseling and mother support group would sustain. 2. Establishment of Community based Mother to Mother Support Group to spread Educate and sosialize more on breastfeeding 3. Active and well-trained Breastfeeding Counselors give productive services (counselling) to mothers 4. Give a strong commitment on baby food promos WHO Code based

Action Taken / PoA for Mother Support Mother Support is the 10 th step of 10 Step to Successful breastfeeding, therefore hospitals conjunction with community based mother support group to educate mothers and her family 1.

(cont…) Action Taken 2. Public Action Campaign – e.g, banned Daffodil Study to do research under 4 months babies on formula ingredient of enrichment vitamin 3. Reward program as appreciation token to company/institution that supports breastfeeding mothers/employee (flexible maternity leaves, time and facility)

(Cont…) Action Taken 4. Create suitable and simple training module for breastfeeding motivator (among the members of mother support)

(cont…) Action Taken Create a supportive environment for breastfeeding (e.g: education on the role of father, grandparent, company/institution, media, government, and religion leaders) by raising public awareness 5.

(Cont…) Action Taken 6. Conduct regular event on breastfeeding and IYCF without sponsors from formula and its affiliated companies 7. Be focal point for government and any NGOs on mothers point of view
