Week 10 Common Industrial Building energy efficiency measures (Energy Management Opportunities)

Industrial Efficiency Measures Understanding building envelopes and energy use in industrial facilities Overview of savings, cost and simple paybacks in terms of product, process and logistical operations Identifying and analyzing typical energy efficiency strategies for industrial facility mechanical systems and lighting Identifying and analyzing energy efficiency strategies industrial processes – Btu per product and process Identifying and analyzing typical energy efficiency strategies for other equipment Using spreadsheets for analyzing energy efficiency strategies in industrial facilities

Site Inspection & Measurement Plan the plant inspection for the areas and the equipment/systems to be investigated Develop industrial energy audit forms to record the findings Plan ahead on the site measurements to supplement or verify the information collected. The measurements should focus on equipment/systems that inadequate information is available Measure by process and product!!

Site Inspection & Measurement During measurement, the sensors should be located at points that can best reflect the need or function of the controlled parameters as dictated by specific product: food, health care labs, manufacturing, logistical operations. Logistical operations of betweeness, closeness and centrality – opportunities for reduced energy and process step reductions. Develop a process map for the product and check for bottlenecks and unnecessary steps

Recycling and reusing materials most likely occur when spent components’ materials and resource use are considered during the pre-design phase of an operation. Naturally, using recyclable materials is important as well as using postconsumer materials to push and pull recycling markets at the same time. Used product disassembly should be designed into the product so that it is easier to capture components and parts when the initial use is complete. Think about how to improve the design the original product you identified earlier to better facilitate the reuse of materials. Using figure 1 (last slide) as a model, draft the forward and reverse cycle and describe each step along the process. Identify a variety of reductions in use of resources with the new process. How would this fit into an energy audit report? Why might it be of interest to a industrial manufacturer owner?
