CERN - European Organization for Nuclear Research Frédéric Hemmer/ITFOCUS - June 13, A Divisional comparison
CERN - European Organization for Nuclear Research Frédéric Hemmer/ITFOCUS - June 13, Paragon Statistics Over 7 months: 1005 PCs were migrated by Paragon
CERN - European Organization for Nuclear Research Frédéric Hemmer/ITFOCUS - June 13, Paragon Statistics (II)
CERN - European Organization for Nuclear Research Frédéric Hemmer/ITFOCUS - June 13, NICE 2K Graphic Card Types 159 Graphic Cards Types
CERN - European Organization for Nuclear Research Frédéric Hemmer/ITFOCUS - June 13, NICE 2K Portable Computer Types 44 Portable Computers Types (429 Portables in total)
CERN - European Organization for Nuclear Research Frédéric Hemmer/ITFOCUS - June 13, Progress & Problems since last meeting (I) Migration Budget crisis has slowed down some migration effort –But still progressing Some divisions claiming that the lack of shared calendaring prevents migration –They were using sharing features of Schedule+ which is not supported anymore –We have launched a pilot based on Exchange 2000 Some people cannot migrate because of special hardware/drivers Performance I/O limitations of the profile servers –Causing people to have long logon/logoff times esp. on Friday afternoons –Nobody really complained/shot us ? –The number of Profile Server has now doubled Backup takes long and uses a lot of resources –Slows down Dfs & Profile access –Affect people working late
CERN - European Organization for Nuclear Research Frédéric Hemmer/ITFOCUS - June 13, Progress & Problems since last meeting (II) Applications Coexistence with some programs is tricky –E.g. last Oracle upgrade screwed up the PATH environmental variable OpenAFS client now coexists with the infrastructure –But tricky to configure Security Security Hot Fixes can now be deployed in a matter of hours –Used four times since the beginning of the year for Internet Explorer and Realplayer A new home directory permissions reset tool – –A scanning tool & campaign will start soon Unexpected More and more NICE 2000 machines used in online environments –But the owners do not talk to us, and are surprised that Antivirus programs or security patches are applied
CERN - European Organization for Nuclear Research Frédéric Hemmer/ITFOCUS - June 13, Future of NICE 95/NT – June ’01 Proposal Freeze NICE 95/NT by end of 2001 –Still installable by floppy –No new applications, functionality, etc Stop (central) support by mid 2002 –No answers from helpdesk –Solution to problems: upgrade to W2K –Still installable by floppy Ensure servers are running until end of 2002 –NICE 95/NT environment still working NICE 95/NT for new PC’s ? –Unlikely new PC’s will be able to run Windows 95 –We still have a stock of Windows 95 capable PC’s Desktop Forum: Plan seems acceptable by all divisions except LHC
CERN - European Organization for Nuclear Research Frédéric Hemmer/ITFOCUS - June 13, Summary NICE 2000 is now the main Windows platform at CERN Still tail effects to get rid of the insecure NICE95/NT Important now to get a plan agreed
