HSIS Annual Meeting October 2011 FHWA Office of Safety Data Support

Types of Office of Safety data requests: Annual projects Special projects HSIS data projects

Annual Projects: These projects are mostly developed using FARS/GES database. Every year these projects will be updated with new year data Different types of data representations (i.e. Tables, charts, etc.) Example: DFS tables and Motorcycle charts

Example 1: DFS table

Example 1: DFS table continued…

Example 2: Motorcycle vs passenger vehicle fatality rates

Special projects: Wide variety of projects. Mostly FARS/GES data (some additional data sources – Census, HPMS, etc.) Examples: –Cross tabulation of fatal crashes by highway design class and crash time by year. –Comparing web article on Most Dangerous Cities to FARS numbers.

Cross tabulation of fatal crashes by highway design class and crash time by year Note: Highway design class and crash time variables were created according to the data request. Highway design class (Combination of No. of lanes and traffic way flow) Crash time (Developed using time of day variable) Total NightDayUnknownNightDayUnknown 2-lane divided lane undivided8,22012, ,42211, , Lane divided5,1366,262534,4245, , Lane undivided8011, ,12813,946 Unknown1,1991,472361,0191,374495,149 Total15,37921, ,68419, ,231

Example: Comparing web article numbers to FARS numbers

HSIS Data Projects : These projects are developed using HSIS database. Often done when FARS/GES do not contain the required data. Example: Data by detailed shoulder width information and Intersection data requests.

Example: Roadway Departure fatal crashes by shoulder width
