ENGLISH 9 Focus: – Reading, Writing, Research, Vocab – SOL Competencies – Basic Writing Skills Reinforced GPA Bump: None Homework: – About 30 minutes per class. Focus: – Reading, Writing, Research, Vocab – SOL Competencies – Mastery of basic writing skills is assumed (Students advance to complex writing skills) – Increased rigor & faster pace – More independent learning GPA Bump: 0.5 Homework: – About hours per class. Year-long Honors Common Assessment Portfolio (which requires out-of-class independent research and partially impacts final exam scores) ACADEMIC

EARTH SCIENCE Explore historical development of science concepts 2 in-class science research projects that will support learning science content (SOL and beyond) Examine current STEM issues impacting society and examine the science content and process to validate HOMEWORK: approx. 30 minutes per class Will conduct in-class science research projects related to class that will support learning science content (SOL and beyond) – Early projects will be largely guided by teacher – Later projects will allow students and teacher to work as a team Independent science investigation in small groups. – investigate questions developed by the class and specifically related to class concepts – use developed skills in scientific process Research skills taught: – Finding reliable data, analyzing data, drawing conclusions, and supporting conclusions with solid evidence from the data. – Students will be expected to have these skills entering Research Biology HOMEWORK: approx. 60 minutes per class GPA bump of 0.5 ACADEMICRESEARCH (HONORS)

BIOLOGY Student Expectations: – Use of excel – Ability to read and understand scientific literature – Create proper MLA citations – Analyze data – draw conclusions and find trends Time Commitment: – When research assignments are in progress, students are expected to spend hours on Biology each night. – Very little class time is used to actively research and complete assignments; work is to be completed outside of class time. Number of Assignments: – Various small assignments: MLA practice, reading research, finding journal articles, interpreting data – 2 “smaller” research assignments – based on class labs – 1 “larger” symposium project – student design lab and complete lab in class Grade Impacts for Research Component (based on school year): – Small percentage of Q1/Q2 – 20%-25% of Q3 grade – 33% of Q4 grade RESEARCH (HONORS)

WORLD HISTORY/GEOGRAPHY TO 1500 (WH1) Course is intended to explicitly prepare students for AP World History course in 10 th grade HOMEWORK: minutes per class Homework designed to reinforce concepts taught in class Text readings on a nightly basis 1-2 essays per quarter Attention paid to preparing students for DBQ, Compare and Change Over Time Essays Primary Source analysis may involve collection of 4 or more documents with a writing prompt Reading of 1 historically based novels per semester Socratic Seminars 1 per quarter GPA bump of 0.5 Course is intended to build student knowledge and skill toward more rigorous courses in the future HOMEWORK: minutes per class Homework designed to reinforce concepts taught in class 1-2 essays per semester. Short Answer responses on each test Primary Source analysis may involve a collection of 1-3 documents with a writing prompt Text readings on a weekly basis In class structured discussions ACADEMIC PRE-AP(HONORS)

POST-GEOMETRY ALGEBRA OPTIONS (AFTER ALGEBRA 1 IS GEOMETRY) Those needing to refresh Algebra 1 skills before moving on to Algebra 2 from Geometry. Mid-way option Slower pace of information Students who struggled in Algebra 1 in the class and/or on the SOL. HOMEWORK: approx 30 minutes per class. Strong Algebra 1 skills. Successful in Algebra 1 and passed Geometry. Algebra 2 curriculum is spread over the entire year. HOMEWORK: approx 30 minutes per class FUNCTIONS ALGEBRA 2ALGEBRA 2/TRIG Very strong Algebra 1 skills. Less calculator use. Faster Pace. Algebra 2 is covered in three quarters. 4 th quarter is Trig. Students expected to infer information and make connections on their own. HOMEWORK: approx 45 minutes per class. GPA bump: 0.5
