By the end of this session the candidate will: Have a systematic approach to the assessment and treatment of the poisoned patient Know where to obtain expert advice in the event of a suspected poisoning Recognise some common physical signs that may be associated with poisoning Know the potential antidotes to common/important poisons Learning outcomes

Case study Clinical setting and history A 45-year-old woman with a history of depression is admitted having taken an overdose Clinical course ABCDE -A : Clear -B : RR 9 min -1 -C : P 110 min -1, BP 90/40 mmHg, 12 lead ECG available -D : Confused with slurred speech, GCS 13/15 (E3, V4, M6), dilated pupils -E : Unremarkable What action will you take?
