What is migration? Migration is the movement of people from one place to another.

Internal Migration is when people migrate within the same country or region  Moving from South Dakota to Utah Moving from South Dakota to Utah  Moving from the country (rural area) to the city (urban area)  Resulting in urbanization – growth of cities

International Migration is when people migrate from one country to another  Moving from the United States to France Interactive Map

Who migrates? Emigrant – someone who permanently exits or leaves a country. Emigrants leave Africa to find a better home.

Who migrates? Immigrant – someone who permanently moves into a country Immigrants move into Germany from Turkey.

Why do people migrate? Economic migration - moving to find work or follow a particular career path. Social migration - moving somewhere for a better quality of life or to be closer to family or friends. Political migration - moving to escape political persecution or war. Environmental causes of migration include natural disasters such as flooding.

What is the Push-Pull Factor? Push factors are the reasons why people leave an area. On your paper list at least three pushes or reasons why people would leave an area.
