Brenna Flaugher July 6, News Darren DePoy (OSU) has agreed to be the DECam project scientist Doesn’t look like we are going to find a Project Engineer –Instead we are supplementing with less experienced engineering to free up Andy and Terri for more global integration coordination –Electrical: Terri added an engineer to her group who will start collecting all the information on all cables and electronic signals in the cage –Mechanical: 50% of an ME has been added to the effort from now until ~ Jan. to help get us ready for CD-2 this fall. Kurt and Andy are working on a requisition for a new engineer (would show up by ~Dec.?) TDR preparations are beginning –Andy has written a section on the Barrel and we are reviewing it for format –Will be used as an example for the other L2 managers to follow –Jean Slaughter is helping us pull the TDR plans together and to specify the requirements documents for each sub-system.

Brenna Flaugher July 6, DECam Project Management Roles (will update the PPMP) DECam Project Scientist (Astrophysicist): –Will help translate scientific and technical requirements into detailed specifications that we can use for vendors –Will be responsible for the DECam Technical Requirements Document (once it is split from the DES Science Requirements document next week) –Help with the decisions we need to make before CD-2 (and after!) Two Deputy Project Managers –Both help with many aspects of the project management –Fermilab DPM: Wyatt Merritt Leading preparation of the TDR, DECam MOUs, DOE Documents, ES&H Signature and decision authority in absence of PM –CTIO DPM: Tim Abbott Primary point of contact with CTIO Authors documents on Integration and Acceptance of DECAM at CTIO Project Integration Team: chaired by the DECam Project Manager and composed of the individuals charged with insuring the successful integration of all the components of DECam. –Mechanical Project Engineer: Andy Stefanik –Electrical Project Engineer: Terri Shaw –Integrated Safety Management: Wyatt Merritt + ES&H –CTIO integration: Tim Abbott –DECam Project Scientist: Darren DePoy

Brenna Flaugher July 6, DECam Project Structure

Brenna Flaugher July 6, DES Organization

Brenna Flaugher July 6, DOE Dark Energy R&D Proposal In Jan. DOE requested proposals for Dark Energy R&D projects. In Feb. DECam submitted a request totaling $2.3M to support primarily the equipment funds for the DECam R&D, plus some funds for work (science and technical) at universities. Fermilab agreed to support the R&D labor costs. June 7 th we learned that our proposal was awarded $0.9M out of $1.2M awarded for Stage 3 experiments ($3.0M total) This was the largest award that we know of There will be another solicitation in FY08, maybe too late for us to be considered R&D.

Brenna Flaugher July 6, R&D Proposal: $0.9M in FY07 funds, arrives ~ end of August 07 UIUC and Mich. funds are for engineering on the DECam Project. UIUC needs a funds for a PD OSU funds are for 25% of a PD to work on DECam - Probably should not count as DECam project funds Penn funds are for evaluation of the relationship between delivered image quality and WL systematic errors – definitely not part of the DECam project cost

Brenna Flaugher July 6, Remaining M&S R&D costs (direct) FY07 (not counting items in the R&D proposal list): $288k direct FY08: $824k Total M&S remaining in R&D: $1112k R&D proposal provides $684k Still need $428k of M&S to complete the R&D program not including contingency

Brenna Flaugher July 6, FY08 Details: DECam Project Request (July 5, 2007) R&D Total = $3.1M – Contingency is not included M&S: $824k Labor: PPD $1,264k, CD $156k Indirect: ~ $896k MIE Total = $3.6M M&S: $2000k – This includes the MIE contingency of ~ $620k Labor: PPD $740k, CD $85k Indirect: ~ $750k DECam Funding Need Profile From CD-1 Review (burdened and escalated to then yr $)

Brenna Flaugher July 6, Earned Value on generic R&D – project 40 codes Plan to delete all the Generic R&D tasks and start on Project funds (project number 470) on August 1st Still have a problem decoding and transferring CD labor in WBS 1.7 to DECam PPD codes -will get this fixed next week Overall we are coming out cheaper than scheduled and we are falling a bit behind Main contribution to “cheaper” is the CCDs which are obligated long before they are costed Additional engineering in 1.5 and 1.3 will bring those closer to the scheduled progress and cost L2 managers will go through the schedule in detail one more time before we are ready to go to project funds.

Brenna Flaugher July 6, FEE – Lots of progress We have scheduled a DES FE Electronics workshop for September –We will review all Monsoon board designs power supplies cabling AlN board design Vacuum Interface Board crate mechanical design crate slow controls design Will resolve many/all of the questions raised at the CD-1 review

Brenna Flaugher July 6, CCD readout noise reduced New Sequencer code from Ricardo Schmidt (CTIO) has allowed us to speed up our readout! Now we meet the tight DECam spec of <10e at 4.0 usec/pix

Brenna Flaugher July 6, From the Monday CCD meeting: readout of single CCD with new sequence

Brenna Flaugher July 6, Multi-CCD Readout!! Each CCD has different cables and thus different noise The best channel meets our tight specifications with synchronous readout of four CCDs!!

Brenna Flaugher July 6, Clock Board Recent progress Engineers from IFAE (Barcelona) and CIEMAT (Madrid) have been here since June 26 Clock Board (Madrid) has been successfully exercised at FNAL –Monsoon interface works well –New focal plane created to exercise clocks –Able to readout CCD with ~12e - at 4us Clock Board

Brenna Flaugher July 6, S-Link working at FNAL Engineer from Barcelona brought boards and software S-Link optical communication is now working at FNAL (replaces Systran) Ran overnight without crashing Installed on “icestorm” – WH14 and “typhoon” – SiDet Will become DECam standard and may be adopted by NOAO

Brenna Flaugher July 6, Other progress/news CCD Yield prediction based on Cold probe data for 40 devices and estimates of the cosmetics and other factors from the Lot 1B devices –Present yield, %, and our expected understanding of its uncertainty suggests that unless we hope for an improvement of 1.4x, we will need to order another lot of 24 wafers (3A) from Dalsa. –Present yield and expected understanding of its uncertainty suggests we will not need to order the contingency Lot (3B) in Dec. ’08. This would change if the yield drops. –Dalsa and LBNL are repolishing wafers in preparation for starting Lots 2C and 2D –adding an additional lot now costs $120k and would ensure that all lots are processed in the same way and are from the same boule with the same resistivity. –this would significantly reduce the risk from the CCDs to the project –Currently working with PPD to determine if this is possible Conceptual design of mounting system for F/8 mirror looks promising – if successful we can avoid the top-end flip and simplify cable and cooling pipe routing.

Brenna Flaugher July 6, Preparing for LN2 Test Inside Lab A, Fall ‘ W Heat Exchanger 12 Meter Elevation 200L 1) Confirm heat can be removed from the camera vessel without trapped vapor pockets in the plumbing. 2) Confirm that vibration due to fluid flow and bubble formation is not a problem. 3) Confirms plumbing can be pumped to the cage. Favorable tests results allow: Going ahead with smaller vessel, Alternative cooling methods are not needed.

Brenna Flaugher July 6, Up-coming Meetings and Workshops Cooling workshop end of July/August, External review in Sept. –Herman, Rich and Dave are assembling documentation. Will set a date for the workshop next week. –CTIO participation is important! Brenna, Darren and John will go to CTIO ~ Aug 20 to work out many technical details on CFIP/ DECam interactions and DM-NOAO interactions
