“INTRODUCTION TO DAVID” CHERYL BIBLE CHAPEL By Bro. Walter Hart

DAVID WAS GREAT BECAUSE OF HIS CONTEXT 1 Sam 8 to 15 A. THE CONTEXT OF6HIS LIFE HISTORICALLY 1 Sam 8:15 - Make us a king to judge us like all the nations” 1 Sam 8: Make them a King” 1 Sam Saul was anointed King (chap 9:2) Reigned miserably 1Sam 15:23 - The Lord rejected Saul being King. 1Sam 16:1 - Samuel was told where to find the new king.

DAVID WAS GREAT BECAUSE OF HIS CONTEXT (CONT) B. THE CONTEXT OF HIS LIFE PERSONALLY When Samuel came looking for the son who would be king, he had to ask the father “Is there anyone else?” C. THE CONTEXT OF HIS LIFE BIBLICALLY He is mentioned in the New Testament more than any other Old Testament character. (61 times) His biography is the most complete in the bible except the Lord Jesus.-62 chapters are devoted to his story.

DAVID WAS GREAT BECAUSE OF HIS CHARISMA A. DAVID WAS A MAN OF PHYSICAL CHARISMA 1 Sam 16:12 Describes David as being ruddy, good to look at and of a beautiful countenance. 1 Sam 16:18 Describes him as skillful in playing, a mighty valiant man, a man of war, prudent in matters, a comely person and the Lord is with him.

DAVID WAS GREAT BECAUSE OF HIS CHARISMA(contd) B. DAVID WAS A MAN OF PERSONAL CHARISMA Nearly everyone can identify with him. His life has many similarities to our lives 1 Sam 29:9 the king of the Philistines once said “thou art God in my sight as an Angel of the God”. C. DAVID WAS A MAN OF NATIONAL CHARISMA 1 Sam 18:16 All Israel and Judah loved him because he went out and came in before them as a shepherd, king, musician, poet.

DAVID WAS GREAT BECAUSE OF HIS CREATIVITY God gave David tremendous power of creativity. Incorporating both the strength of a warrior and athlete with the gentleness of a poet and singer. David wrote both strong and gentle songs. His hymns of praise offer wonderful pictures of God and his greatness.

DAVID WAS GREAT BECAUSE OF THE CHOICE OF HIS LIFE The #1 reason for his greatness was that God chose him and was with him constantly. There are 5 passages which tell us how David became king and they all reveal “God choose him.” A.1 Sam 13:14 we are told “the Lord sought David” B. Psalm 89:20 we read “The Lord found David” C. Psalm 78:70 we see “the Lord chose David” D.1 Sam 13:14 we read “The Lord commanded David” E.1 Sam 16:1 We see “The Lord has provided David” 1 Sam 16:13-14 The Spirit of the Lord departed from Saul and rested on the heart of David.

DAVID WAS GREAT BECAUSE OF THE CONFESSION OF HIS LIFE His whole life is on display in the O.T. If he were to live today the tabloids would want to only focus on his sin saying “Great, But he blew it! “ They would write off what God accomplished in his life, making his life a failure. But he was a man with like passions as we are who all fall in sin. 1King 15:5 gives us the summary of David’s life. David was a frail man and he blew it but he confessed his sin (Psalm 51) and moved on. The Lord forgave him. He is our God too.
