Essential Question What is Chemistry?

Chemistry The study of the composition, structure, and properties of matter, also the processes and the energy changes that matter goes through. What makes up a material and how it can or will change when heated, cooled, or combined with other materials.

Branches of Chemistry 1.Organic- Carbon compounds 2.Inorganic- does not contain carbon-hydrogen compounds 3.Physical - energy's effect on the properties and changes of matter 4.Analytical- finding out what makes up (components) materials and what is in (composition) materials 5.Bio- what’s going on in living things 6.Theoretical- Using math and technology to explain chemical behavior, design new compounds, and understand the properties behind these synthetic compounds.

Types of Research in Chemistry Basic: To answer the simple question why What are the properties of a substance? Applied: A response to a problem or to find the solution to a problem. Technological Development Exploration to improve humans quality of life Find new uses for stuff already discovered.

RESEARCH Applied Basic Technological Developments
