Overview This Web Quest is designed for 3 rd grade students. It fulfills the Social Studies SOL objective 3.11 The student will explain the importance of the basic principles that form the foundation of a republican form of government by ……c) identifying the accomplishments of ….Martin Luther King Jr.

Introduction Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was one of the main leaders in the American Civil Right’s Movement. He delivered his famous “I Have A Dream” speech with hopes to promote equal treatment for all human beings.

Task How would you feel about Dr. King if you were there when he gave his famous “I Have A Dream” speech? What would it be like to live during this time? You will be divided into four groups. Each group will have one of the following roles: –Group #1: Owner of the town grocery store –Group #2: A newspaper reporter –Group #3: A bus driver –Group #4: A follower of Dr. King ~ It’s the day of the speech. Describe how you are feeling, what’s going on around you, and what you think will happen next. Be sure to include facts in your description, for example, dates, people, cities.

Process The first step is to learn all you can about this time period. What is Dr. King fighting for? How do people feel about this? What types of things are happening? Explore the following sites for ideas: Use your imagination, but try to only imagine how your group would feel about Dr. King.

Evaluation Creativity Student lacks creativity & the use of imagination when describing their role. Student creativity is limited, as well as their use of imagination. Student uses their imagination & is extremely creative when describing their role. Accuracy The student’s description of the events during this time period is not accurate and incomplete. The student’s description of the events during King’s time is inaccurate and the student does not include important facts. The student’s description is accurate and many important facts are included. Completion The student has failed to answer many or all of the questions asked. The student answered the questions asked, but did not fully explain their answers. The student answered all of the questions asked and explained their answers fully.

Conclusion After the completion of this activity, students should be able to tell of Dr. Martin Luther King’s goals and how he strived to achieve these goals. They will realize that people felt differently about Dr. King’s dream. As educators, it is important to share useful information and tools for the benefit of our students.
