Management February 20, Annual Review of the Muon Accelerator Program (MAP) Subcommittee members: Ron Prwivo, Ron Lutha, and Jim Kerby

Management Findings: Scope –The overarching goal is to establish feasibility of muon accelerator technologies Funding –Currently the MAP program is funded by DOE at a level of approximately $13M and is looking to achieve a goal of $16M/year from FY15 through FY20. At the level of $16M the program will have some flexibility to address critical technology issues beyond MICE and MuCool. 2

Funding (cont.) 3

Schedule: 4

5 A Program Execution Plan has been developed to provide structure of how the Muon Collider fit within the Energy Frontier beyond the LHC era. –Program Baseline/Scope –TEC is approximately $110M –Schedule is approximately 2020 –Funding profile MICE, 4D cooling proof of concept is necessary for the overall success of the MAP program. No show stoppers that would prevent a feasibilty assessment have been identified.

Comments: –Fermilab as the host lab for the MAP program appears to have the commitment and support of the Laboratory Director. –Many project like documents have been developed over the past years that have helped to focus the MAP program that articulate the roles and responsibilities. –The committee agrees that a Program Engineer to Integrate various aspects of the MAP and to provide QA/QC of the components that are being built by various groups is needed. –The team appears to be adequately focused on the goals and objectives of the MAP program and the success of the MICE. –The changes to the management structure by the Program Director over the past 2-years have been very positive. Management 6

Recommendations: 1.Fill the Program Engineer position by the end of the Fiscal Year. 2.Develop an assumptions document that has the boundary conditions for other member organizations July 31, Management 7

The quality and significance of the MAP scientific and technical accomplishments, and the merit, feasibility and impact of its planned research program; –Yes, scientific and technical accomplishments of the MAP continue to make progress with the majority of the emphasis on the MICE work. If the feasibility assessment has positive results MAP could lead to many significant research facilities. The effectiveness in strategic planning and organization, development of appropriate core competencies and implementing a prioritized and optimized program; –Yes the MAP program has a good strategic planning and they are organized appropriately to move in the right direction for the feasibility assessment. Additional funding could help provide support to accomplish the mission of the MAP. The effectiveness and appropriateness of the laboratory interactions to maximize the leveraging of existing infrastructure and expertise available at those laboratories; –Yes, Fermilab is the host laboratory for the MAP feasibility assessment and has supported at a lower level the involvement of member laboratories. The status of the MICE experiment as well as interactions with international collaborations. –Yes it has shown improvement with the new organization and progress is being monitored by the accomplishment of milestones. It appears that they going in the right direction. Charge Questions 8
