Creating tomorrow today: Strategies for planned development in groups, organizations and society Friday 8 April 2005 Baltic IT&T Conference Declan Fitzsimons

Development in human groups How can we create the development and change in human groups that we want?

Why is this theme important? 1.We all spend a lot of time in organizations 2.In order to solve the problems we face as human beings, we must co-operate and collaborate together

Why is this theme important at this conference? There are broadly three groups represented in this room Representatives of State institutions Those that provide IT&T services Those that buy them You may be in more than one group!

We are all in the same business! The business of creating, managing, responding to change

The word ‘change’ has been ‘sterilized’

Planned Change in Human Systems Governments Organizations

Governments Reduce Drinking and driving Teenage pregnancies Binge drinking amongst young people Drug use Obesity in children Number of new AIDs infections Bad behaviour at schools

Governments Increase Number of people going to University People buying shares on stock market Owning their own homes Using public transport Mothers returning to work Racial minorities in police force Drivers taking passengers

Organizations ‘How to make people understand that the customers pay their salaries!’ ‘Right now 10% of the money comes from selling to external clients..in two years it will be 90%..we need to change the way this organization works’

Organizations ‘We have been working, just like a family, but now we are too big. We have to get organized’ ‘Everyone is good at showing they have achieved their targets, but the performance of the company as a whole isn’t good…’

Organizations ‘We need to develop our managers…they are all technical people and we have to help them understand how to coach people’ ‘Everyone says the problems are nothing to do with them…Sales blame the technical guys, the technical guys blame the sales people..’

Integrated Patient Management First time I.T. used To support health care Professionals directly in ‘front line’ Each nurse has a mobile Computer / hand held device Allows them to schedule and book follow up procedures

Integrated Patient Management System supports a multi-disciplinary team Ireland’s first mobile VPN with Eircell as partner

But.. The paper records are more real! You think you’re better than us! Managers! What do they know about health? I might lose my job… Is it safe?

Regional Traveller Health Strategy 22,000 travellers in Ireland 0.5% of population Life expectancy much lower 75% have never visited an optician 3 x more likely to miscarry 1 in 3 women suffer from long term depression

What we are really talking about.. Alienation Shame of learning Envy Fear loss of power, status Loss

Three strategies 1. The ‘engineering’ approach 2. The ‘socio-psychodynamic’ approach 3. The ‘power’ approach

Widely believed Reality closer to
