And Representing the Solution Set on a Number Line

 Essentially, they are EQUATIONS with INEQUALITY signs  You can solve Inequalities using the same skills  You need to understand the language of Inequality – next slide.  You need to be careful with negative values of the unknown!  Your teacher will explain that one later!

LESS than GREATER than OR equal to LESS than OR equal to GREATER [or more] than 2 < 5 6 > 3 “2 is less than 5” “6 is greater than 3” Or, from the right, “5 is greater than 2” Or, from the right, “3 is less than 6”

One-sided Inequalities like 4x + 7 > 19 Two-sided Inequalities like 11 < 4x + 7 < 19

Subtract 3 each side Divide by 4 each side 5 Filled IN because 5 is Included Menu

Add 6 each side Divide by 5 each side 4 NOT Filled IN because 4 is NOT Included Menu

Add 7 each side Divide by 2 each side 6 11 INTEGER SOLUTIONS? 7,8,9,10,11 Menu
