Introduction Paragraphs Argumentative Essay

November 9, 2015 Today’s agenda: Turn in your research to the bin!  Figurative language  Elements of an introduction  Share examples of each element  Begin typing introduction paragraph—print by the end of class

Elements of an introduction paragraph W.8.1-Write arguments to support claims with clear reasons and relevant evidence.

MLA You must follow along as I set up my paper using MLA. I will ONLY go over MLA ONCE. If you do not follow along, you will need to use the reference sheet from Mrs. Christensen or use your computer. This is roughly your seventh paper this school year. Use other English teacher examples and my own examples for references.

Hook Rhetorical Question Anecdote Snapshot Staccato Quote W.8.1-Write arguments to support claims with clear reasons and relevant evidence.

You Write! I will give you five minutes to write your hook for your argumentative paper. Use one of the techniques we just discussed. Once you are finished, check your writing and MLA. We will continue once the five minutes elapses.

Background Information 1. Your Topic When? What? Why? Who? W.8.1-Write arguments to support claims with clear reasons and relevant evidence. Throughout history, males and females participate on their own designated sports’ teams. Male sports are known to be more physical; tackling and wrestling their opponents. Girls focus on guarding, passing, and tumbling in their respected sports. Both genders devote blood, sweat, tears and countless hours to become better athletes for their hobby. Overtime, a cross collaboration has emerged. Men are seen on the sidelines cheering on their high school football team, and women are kicking field goals after touchdowns are scored.

You Write! I will give you ten minutes to write your background information for your argumentative paper. Answer the questions we discussed. Use your knowledge, the packet provided, or your computer for additional resources. Once you are finished, check your hook and background information for errors and check your MLA. We will continue once the ten minutes elapses.

Thesis Statement 1.Tells what the whole paper is about 2.Is specific, clear, and easy to understand 3.Uses descriptive words 4.Begins with prepositional phrase instead of subject/verb W.8.1-Write arguments to support claims with clear reasons and relevant evidence. In high school athletics, all athletes on a team should have playing time and recognition.

You Write! I will give you two minutes to copy your thesis statement for your argumentative paper from your day one outline. Once you are finished, check your introduction and MLA. We will continue once the two minutes elapses.
