 Reproduction in seed plants

 Gymnosperm seeds are not enclosed by a protective fruit

1. What structure produces pollen? 2. How is pollen transferred from the male to the female cone?

 Plants that produce flowers and fruits  In your notebooks, list some angiosperms you’re familiar with.

 In gymnosperms, the cone is the reproductive structure.  In angiosperms, the flower is the reproductive structure.

1. What is the function of flowers? 2. What structures make up the male parts of a flower? 3. The female parts? 4. What purpose do the color and shape of the petals serve?

 On which of the bee’s structures can you observe pollen?

GYMNOSPERM  Oldest type of seed plant  Seeds are NOT enclosed in a protective coating  Needle-like leaves  Produce cones for reproduction  Deep roots  Mostly trees ANGIOSPERM  Most common type of seed plant  Seeds are protected inside a fruit  Produce flowers for reproduction  Live almost everywhere on Earth

 Angiosperms and gymnosperms are wind pollinated but most angiosperms rely on birds, bats, and insects.

 Seeds are dispersed by: 1. Wind 2. Water 3. Animals

 Animals bury or hide fruits and seeds  Animals eat fruits and seeds are not damaged when they pass through digestive tract

Seeds inside dry fruits that have tiny hooks attach to animals or clothing

 Sketch a flower in your notebook and label the parts.

Create a Venn diagram in your notebook. Label the sections Angiosperm, Gymnosperm and Both. Classify each characteristic in the correct category. ____ Seeds protected inside a fruit ____ Reproduces using seeds ____ Needle-like leaves ____ Produces cones for reproduction ____ Most common type of seed plant ____ Produces flowers for reproduction ____ Oldest type of seed plant ____ Contains leaves, stems, and roots ____ "naked seed" ____ “seeds in a little case” angio (little case) ____ Redwood and pine trees ____ Apple trees and roses ____ Uses photosynthesis to make food

 “stinking corpse lily”  Foul odor attracts pollinators
