November 4, 2010 DRILL Write each question and answer. 1.What is another term for a limit to the design process? 2.What are used to evaluate an engineer’s design? 1. Constraint 2. 4 Design Principles U3a-L3

YESTERDAY’S HOMEWORK U3a-L3 Pick a technological artifact that interests you. What needs did this technology fulfill? What resources were used to design and create this technology? What preceding technologies were necessary for the development of this technology? What innovative or inventive ideas were used in the creation of this technology?

8 CONSTRAINTS on the ENGINEERING DESIGN PROCESS 1.Safety – is the product safe to use? 2.Reliability – will it work consistently over time? 3.Cost – is it affordable? 4.Quality Control – does it meet customer requirements? 5.Environmental Concerns – does it harm the natural or human environment negatively? 6.Manufacturability – can it be made? 7.Maintenance – how easily can it be maintained or upheld? 8.Ergonomics – how efficiently can the human body utilize it?

Clearly Defined Steps: 1. Defining a problem 2. Brainstorming 3. Researching and generating ideas 4. Identifying criteria and specifying constraints 5. Exploring possibilities 6. Selecting an approach 7. Developing a design proposal 8. Making a model or prototype 9. Testing and evaluating the design, using specifications 10. Refining the design 11. Creating or making it 12. Communicating processes and results U3b-L3 ENGINEERING DESIGN PROCESS

4 DESIGN PRINCIPLES used to EVALUATE DESIGN Design is the result of a formal, sequential process. Design is driven by profit motive and market ($ or not). Design is the result of goal-oriented research. Designs must be continually checked, refined, and improved. Note: Design problems seldom arise in a clearly defined form. Design requirements sometimes compete with each other. U3a-L3

MATH Engineers: –Use the language of mathematics to express mathematical ideas precisely –Analyze and evaluate the mathematical thinking and strategies of others –Create and use representations to organize, record, and communicate mathematical ideas –Select, apply, and translate among mathematical representations to solve problems –Use representations to model and interpret physical, social, and mathematical phenomena U3a-L3

U3a-L2 EXTENSION ACTIVITY Develop a brief (2-minute) oral presentation using Microsoft Powerpoint on one of the “Greatest Engineering Achievements of the Twentieth Century” that will address the following topics: a.The need or desire that led to the projects. b.The resources (inputs) used to create the project. c.The personal characteristics of the people who planned and built the project. d.The constraints that impacted the development of the project. e.An analysis of the project based on the four design principles.

U3a-L2 POWERPOINT TIPS Write these tips down! 1.Make sure the color of background and color of text are highly contrasted: THIS IS GOOD THIS IS BAD

POWERPOINT TIPS Write these tips down! 2.Avoid looooong sentences and paragraphs by using short bullets: The purpose of the design process is to provide designers with a method of approaching problems. The design process always incorporates the seven inputs that ALL technology systems have in common, namely people, time, information, capital, machines and tools, materials, and energy. Also, the engineering design process is ALWAYS constrained by the 8 constraints, sometimes greater than others: safety, manufacturability, cost, ergonomics, environmental concerns, quality control, maintenance, reliability. BAD:

POWERPOINT TIPS Write these tips down! 2.Avoid looooong sentences and paragraphs by using short bullets: Design Process: A method of approaching problems. Always includes seven inputs: People, time, information, capital, machines and tools, materials, and energy. Always 8 constraints: Safety, manufacturability, cost, ergonomics, environmental concerns, quality control, maintenance, reliability. GOOD:

POWERPOINT TIPS Write these tips down! 3.Just cover main “bullets” on screen. 4.Speak about the details. 5.Don’t get carried away with graphics and text font – make sure graphics are relevant!

U3a-L2 HOMEWORK Begin research on your power point presentation. If you need access to a computer, the computer lab in the library will be available.
