U.S. Facts

The cuisine of the United States has influences from many cultures, reflecting the wide variety of immigrants who have made the country their home.

The cuisine of the Native Americans was of course the first American cuisine, and it leant a great deal to not only American cooking but food around the world: ingredients such as turkey, potatoes, corn, and squash.

The average American eats foods from many cultures. American cuisine also varies greatly by region.

Regional Northeastern cuisine frequently includes seafood, often cooked into chowders or served boiled or steamed. Baked beans and corn are common accompaniments, and dinner frequently ends with pies and cobblers made from berries or nuts.

In the South, meals may include salted ham, wild game, and fish. Common dishes include barbecued ribs and pork cooked with greens. Hominy grits often serve as a side dish.

The cuisine of the East Coast, for example, makes use of fish and seafood to much greater degree

Cajun cuisine, found in Louisiana, is based on rice and seafood. Cajun food is spicy, due to the addition of cayenne peppers and chile peppers. Common Cajun dishes include bouillabaisse, a mix of seafood cooked in a broth flavored with wine. One of the most popular Cajun desserts is the beignet, a deep-fried pastry covered in confectioner's sugar.

Midwestern cuisine has German, British, and Scandinavian influences. Dairy products, whether milk, cheese, or eggs, are common ingredients. Main dishes include roasts, stews, and dishes made from trout and whitefish, and are frequently accompanied by wheat or corn bread.

Southwestern A strong Mexican influences, and such dishes as tacos, fried tortillas (round, thin cakes made from unleavened wheat or corn flour) folded around a mixture of meat and cheese, are found in both Southwestern and Mexican cuisine. "California cuisine" is used to describe a type of West Coast cooking that focuses on fresh, local ingredients prepared in a simple manner.

South Dakota adopted the honey bee as the state insect in 1978 Mitchell, South Dakota is the home of the world's only Corn Palace

Built in 1892 in Mitchell, South Dakota, the Corn Palace was created to dramatically display the products of the harvest of South Dakota's farmers, in murals on the outside of the building. The murals are made from thousands of bushels of corn and other grains and grasses such as wild oats, rye, straw, and wheat.

Each year these corn decorations are completely stripped down and entirely new murals are created. The Corn Palace is a great tourist attraction and a meeting place for the community. Many events are held here and the most popular is the Corn Palace Stampede Rodeo. But the horses must be watched carefully so they don't eat the building!
