OBJ: Given notes, activity sheet SWBAT explain what a mutation is, the types and causes of mutations with 70% accuracy. BRING IN TEXT BOOK DN: Complete MMLQ quiz; hand-in lab write-up and quiz scantron. Hand-in Constructed Response Packets #1 & 2. Mutation Notes Mutation: change in the DNA code Good/Beneficial: helps an organism to better adapt to its environment; ex: white vs. brown rabbit in Alaska, Siberia Bad/Harmful: CANCER; no fertilization, dead embryo, dead fetus, dead newborn (miscarriage); genetic defects (Hemophilia, Cystic Fibrosis).

Mutation Notes Types of Mutations: 1] Substitution: remove a base pair, then in its place add a new base pair 2] Deletion: remove a base pair only 3] Addition: add a base pair

Mutation Notes Causes of Mutations: 1] chemical (ex: nicotine, gasoline) 2] radiation (ex: gamma rays, X rays) 3] genetic (ex: triple negative breast cancer) 4] fried foods (ex: transfats, french fries, potato chips, fried chicken)

Importance of Mutations Mutations and Sexual Reproduction (meiosis crossover) produces the variation (variety) seen in sexually reproducing species. Variation allows a species to best adapt to a rapidly changing environment. If a species can not adapt to its environment, it will go extinct. Species extinction
