Discipline and Special Education Students: What’s Going on, How Does It Affect Teachers and Who Is Doing the Misbehaving? By Deona Cox Research Methods Class Fall 2004

Reason for Paper Teacher Discipline Inadequate Punishment Given Lack of Understanding Teacher Disgust

What the Research Says

Plans for Research Check on which modifications, if any, have been made to IDEA ‘97 Conduct survey of teachers and administrators Find court cases - pro and con - dealing with discipline and special ed Collect data on special ed boys vs. girls - misbehavior in classroom

What I Am Looking For Rules and Regulations 1. Government 2. State 3. Local Steps Teachers Can Take

Teacher / Administration Survey How do they feel about discipline in their class concerning special ed students? Do they believe discipline is handled adequately when special ed students are sent to the office for punishment? Does the misbehavior of special ed students interfere with classroom learning?

Looking At Boy / Girl Ratios Are there more special ed boys that are behavioral problems than girls? If so, why? Are the misbehaviors the result of the same learning disabilities or do they vary?
