What is Matter made of? Atoms – the basic particle of which all matter, EVERYTHING, is made * A sheet of paper is approximately 10,000 atoms thick

Elements Simplest of substances made of only one kind of atom Cannot be broken down in anything else Represented by one or two letter symbols Identified by Physical and Chemical Properties

Molecule – a group of Two or more Atoms held together by a chemical bond. *Chemical bond – the force of attraction between two atoms Two of the same atoms Different atoms, Oxygen & Hydrogen

atom A compound made up of 2 different elements A compound made up of 7 different elements Compound – a substance made of Two or more Elements held together by a chemical bond

A compound can be broken down into elements A compound made up of 3 different elements An element

Difference between Molecules & Compounds Molecules are two or more atoms. These atoms can be of the same element or not. Example: Oxygen Gas (O 2 ) or Water (H 2 O) Compounds are two or more different Elements. Example: Water (H 2 O) Sodium Chloride (NaCl)

Chemical Formula: Element Symbols and Ratio (# of atoms) C 6 H 12 O 6 or 2(H 2 0)

Chlorine Cl 2 Hydrogen chlorideHCl Methane CH 4 Carbon dioxide CO 2 Draw a line between the molecule and its name.

Type of Matter:Made up of:Element or Compound (one is neither) Water Hydrogen and Oxygen Coal Carbon Carbon dioxide Carbon and Oxygen Oxygen Gas Oxygen + Oxygen Chalk Calcium, Carbon & Oxygen Wax Carbon & Hydrogen Table salt Sodium & Chlorine Helium
