WHAT HAPPENED? On The 28 th of January in the year of 1986, the space shuttle challenger took off. 73 seconds after take off the shuttle broke apart killing all of the crew members on board. Disintegrating over the Atlantic ocean.

HOW? The malfunction occurred in the O-ring seal in the right rocket booster. The failure caused a leak in the solid rocket booster which let the hot gases from inside to come out which caused the whole thing to fall off. The shuttle’s aerodynamics were altered and it could not with stand the force of leaving the atmosphere

O-RING The O-ring is essentially a seal that is responsible for containing about ten megapascals (unit of pressure). One of the theories as for why the O- ring failed was that the whether was too cold out side making it become brittle.

SOLID ROCKET BOOSTER Solid Rocket boosters are responsible for making about 80% of liftoff for the space shuttle (3,300,000 pounds at launch). The “SRBS’s” from the challenger were found in the Atlantic ocean, repaired and used many more times for later missions.
