SAFETY MEASURES OBJECTS OF AFFECTION OR LIFELINES? HELMET TECHNOLOGY PROTECTIVE GEAR RIDER TRAINING/EDUCATION Which measure is most important in reducing rider injury and death rates? Lior Bar-David | Thesis I: Proposal | Manu/Mahler ALL ARE IMPORTANT

MOTORCYCLE SAFETY? ILLUSION OR FACT

MOTORCYCLE SAFETY WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW Motorcycle safety, two words that come-off as an oxymoron when placed together. But the rider of this bike survived with minor burns, a fractured collar bone and minor bruising. It wasn’t a miracle or dumb-luck that saved his life; his survival was made possible thanks to protective gear and the intelligence to use it. “So you want to ride a motorcycle… and not die” Lior Bar-David | Thesis I: Proposal | Manu/Mahler

THE FACTS OF LIFE THESIS OBJECTIVES To transform common negative perceptions and fearful attitudes associated with motorcycles and motorcycle safety. Through the exploration, development and ultimately the execution of new assistive technology that accrete rider awareness. A BREAK IN THE CHAIN TO EDUCATE OR NOT TO EDUCATE? MONASH University in Victoria, Australia has done extensive research on motorcycle safety and equipment. They concluded in one case study that there was no reduction in the accident rates based on: riders who took a riders’ training course and those riders who did not. Interestingly enough, riders who took a training course were more likely to wear protective gear than riders who did not. So, do riders’ training courses make better drivers? The Insurance Bureau of Canada seems to think so. Offering better rates to riders who complete a certified training course. Do you see the break in the chain? SOURCES Insurance Bureau of Canada Statistics Canada MONASH University: Accident Research Centre Insurance Corporation of British Columbia Lior Bar-David | Thesis I: Proposal | Manu/Mahler

KNOWLEDGE IS EVERYTHING RESEARCH PROCESS & METHODOLOGIES COLLECT & REVIEW: Lior Bar-David | Thesis I: Proposal | Manu/Mahler Statistics: Accident Rates and Common Injuries Interview: Emergency Personnel (Fire, Ambulance, Police) Survey: Riders and None Riders Culture: Motorcycle Culture and Counter Culture Understand: Stakeholder Analysis and Persona Development Economic: Injuries vs. Hospital Funding

AIM HIGH OR YOU MIGHT MISS THE BOWL GOALS & DELIVERABLES NEW WAYS OF THINKING: Lior Bar-David | Thesis I: Proposal | Manu/Mahler Increase perception, reinvent safety, redefine motorcycle culture. Develop new safety/protective gear. Dispel fear through innovation and improved safety measures.
