Glee is a musical comedy/drama series on Fox. Focuses on the William McKinley High School Glee Club in Lima, Ohio. “New Directions” Relationships, sexuality and social issues Song covers Balance between chart toppers and show tunes. Song choices = Theme of episode

Does the TV show Glee give an accurate portrayal of what life truly is like for the typical high school student?

Marxist Ideological Rhetorical Analysis Cultivation Theory

Q

Right from the very beginning of this show, the concepts of “jocks”, “popular kids” and “losers” is the focus of the show. The show immediately wants viewers to have the idea that all high schools revolve around the world of stereotypes.

Mr. Schu blackmails the star quarterback of the football team, Finn Hudson, into joining the glee club, by pretending that he found illegal substances in Finn’s locker.

Terri gets a job as a school nurse at McKinely High and gives kids in New Directions pseudoephedrine tablets. Rachel and Finn feel guilty and tell Mr. Schu. Relating to a Marxist analysis, people to look up would be characters like Mr. Schu, and those to look down upon would be Terri Schuester and Sue Sylvester. However…

There is an episode during the first season that most high school girls will say that they can relate to. Crush on a teacher! Mr. Schu tries to let Rachel down gently when he realizes that she has a crush on him.

Quinn Fabray’s parents find out that she is pregnant, and kick her out of their house. PLOT TWIST! Here, the show is trying to convince viewers that these kind of struggles are very common in high school. However…

Coach Sylvester demands that Mercedes lose at least 10 pounds in order to be allowed to stay on the cheerleading squad. Gives viewers an inside look at what many kids have to suffer through in high school. This episode also addresses the concept of bullying and how being bullied can negatively influence a young person’s life.

Glee has moments of truth and wisdom but also has a lot of moments of comical judgment and satire. The show makes a point to try to be as realistic to the events that kids go through in high school… Homosexuality, teen pregnancy, acceptance issues, love, peer pressure, and survival.

Do I believe Glee is making a mockery of all high school situations as if to say that high school drama is petty and not worth the time or energy? Do I think that Glee accurately portrays the real life struggles of the typical American high school student? Is Glee trying to help society realize that we need to do more to protect our youth from more pressing concerns, like bullying and teen pregnancy?
