An Effective Active Reading Technique The SQ3R Method An Effective Active Reading Technique

Active Learning Active VS passive learning Learn new information Understand and remember better.

What is SQ3R Survey Question Read Recite Review

Active reading Strategy Strategies You use for reading academic material are different from the ones you use to read in general.

The Use of a Study System Make your reading more efficient Increase comprehension Provide immediate ways to test your knowledge Incorporate active learning techniques.

Active Reading Strategy When changing or modifying habits it easier to do so gradually. The idea is to ADOPT, REVISE and CONTINUE to use active study strategies.

SQ3R Breakdown Survey = Preview Question = Ask guide questions Read = Read for meaning Recite = Test yourself. Review = Review after you read.

S = Survey S = Survey: After you have surveyed the material you should then have a general idea of what it is about and how it is organized.

What You Should Survey Title/ Subtitle Chapter introduction First Paragraph Headings The first sentence under headings Typographical aids Graphs, charts etc The final paragraph/summary End of chapter material.

After You Survey Reflect on what you already know about the subject- background knowledge Brainstorm Make a list of everything that comes to mind.

Q = Question Try to form questions that you can answer as you read. Turn each boldfaced heading in to a question. As you read more the questions should become easier to create.

Source of the Material Knowing the source of the material will help you establish the accuracy of what you are reading. This is the first question you should ask yourself before you even read.

Question Process Preview before you try to ask questions. Turn every heading into a series of questions. As you read the section, look for answers to your questions. Avoid asking one word answer questions.

Learning Style Tips Auditory learner: Asking and answering questions aloud may help you. Visual learner: Writing down the questions and answers may help you grasp the information better.

R = Read Read the material, section by section, as you read look for the answer to the question that you formed from the heading.

R = Recite After you finish each section stop! Can you answer your question for the section? If not look back and find the answer. Summarize the answer in your own words. Write answers to your guide questions in the margin of the textbook.

R = Review When you have finished, go back and read all headings again. Recall your question and try to answer it. If you can’t recall the answer, go back and find it. The test yourself again.

Revising The SQ3R System Evaluate what you have done: Why is the information important? How can I use it? How does it fit with the class lectures?

Summary What is the SQ3R Method? Why is it effective? What can you do to be sure that you understand your reading assignments?
