United Nations Statistics Division Activities carried out since the last meeting of the Expert Group

Previous recommendations  At its last meeting in 2007 the EG recommended action on the following items related to UNSD’s work on classifications: Development of an ISIC Rev.3.1 to ISIC Rev.4 correspondence Development of the Companion Guide to ISIC and CPC Development of an Implementation Guide based on existing Eurostat documents Development of a correspondence between CPC Ver.2 and COICOP Conduct of regional workshops on ISIC and CPC implementation Review of primary applications as a first step to updating or expanding the BEC Regional partnerships for technical cooperation

Actions carried out  ISIC 3.1 – ISIC 4 correspondence Has been developed and is accessible at the UNSD Classifications website  Companion Guide to ISIC and CPC Available in draft form for review by the Expert Group Drafting carried out by the Technical Subgroup  Delayed due to resource limitations, but majority of work completed

Actions carried out  Implementation Guide Available in draft form for review Based on suggested documents, but expanded and revised Initial review by country experts Further review to be discussed at this meeting  Correspondence CPC Ver.2 – COICOP Work not yet started Subject to review of priorities by the Expert group

Actions carried out  Regional workshops UNSD has conducted regional workshops on ISIC and CPC:  ECLAC – June 2007  ESCWA – Dec  ECA – Nov  ESCAP – Nov  ESCAP – Sept (planned) One additional workshop for French speaking countries is still under consideration Individual country assistance has also been provided

Actions carried out *  Review of the BEC No concrete action has been taken for this review Should this be placed on the work plan for the next period?  Are any modifications to the goals necessary?

Actions carried out *  Regional partnerships for technical cooperation Involves all parties of the Expert Group UNSD to set up a discussion forum with regional moderators  Not completed due to lack of IT resources  Do we need to pursue this in the next period?

Actions carried out  UNSD has maintained the classifications hotline and issues the Classifications Newsletter In general, there are fewer requests to the Hotline, but these requests become more complex Does a discussion forum provide a suitable alternative to this mechanism?

Actions carried out  ISIC Rev.4 and CPC Ver.2 have been completed Available on-line  ISIC is available in print form  Language versions exist or are about to be completed

Questions for EG  Should the process of reviewing the BEC be restarted? What goals should the process have?  Should the setup of a discussion forum with regional moderation be further pursued? How will it’s role vs. the Classifications Hotline be defined? What role does such a forum have in the formalized updating mechanism for the classifications? # # to be considered during discussion of ISIC/CPC follow-up (agenda item on Wednesday)
