The International Fund for Agricultural Development is a specialized UN Agency and an International Financial Institution (IFI). Methodology/Financing mechanisms: Through loans and grants, IFAD works with governments from Developing countries (fragile or not) Annual portfolio in 2007: 650 M$ in Loans to Governments,50 M$ in grants. Total 9 Billion US $, 707 programmes since Description of IFAD

IFAD mandate Mandate: Enabling the rural poor to overcome their poverty. Three strategic objectives are: Strengthen the capacity of the rural poor and their organizations Improve equitable access to productive natural resources and technologies Increase access by poor to financial services and markets

Financial partnerships IFAD and Belgium Survival Funds (BSF) are working together since BSF has increased the value of IFAD’s investment by addressing the most basic needs of poor people: family nutrition and health (280M$). Financial partnership can create win-win situation where integrated approaches to community development provide synergistic effects.

The Water and Rural Infrastructure desk IFAD is currently defining its operational strategy on Water for Rural Livelihoods. Focus on poor rural peoples’ demand and institutions for water to serve their food, feed, and fibre production – including livestock, fully acknowledges their interaction with the environmental use of water, and hinges on basic needs and rights to water for domestic purposes, nutrition and health (Pro-poor Rural Water and Health Sanitation/ppRWHS).
