THE INQUIRY MODEL WE WILL USE Brunner’s model of Inquiry (2012) We will be using questions from this model to guide our thinking and learning.

WHAT SHAPES IDENTITY? In groups of 3-4 complete a spider diagram, drawing on your understanding from last year. Include the key concepts from last year: Change: In what ways does identity continually develop/ change? Responsibility: What responsibilities shape my identity? Influences: How is identity shaped by social, geographical and historical factors? Beliefs and values: How do my values and beliefs shape my identity?

WHAT IS ‘CULTURE’? In teams of no more than four come up with a definition of ‘Culture’ and try to give 2-3 examples of elements of culture: eg the sport/s played. Share these with the class and determine an overall ‘class’ definition. Write it in your journal.

Identity and culture are interdependent (connected) and are shaped by a range of perspectives. This inquiry will go deeper into what these perspectives might be and the effect they have on Hong Kong’s identity. KEY IDEA

ASSESSMENT: Give your recommendation as to whether Hong Kong should be considered’ Asia’s World City’ based on the research you have conducted. Using Hong Kong’s ‘Happy Planet Index’ ranking, give a speech to persuade your audience about the steps that need to be taken to improve this ranking, and taking action to do so. You will have the choice of three options to demonstrate your understanding of the concept of identity using Hong Kong as a case study. Your task will be to persuade through a speech to them. In consultation with your teacher, devise a different topic based on a persuasive speech and using Hong Kong as a case study.

HONG KONG: A WORLD CITY? Our inquiry will lead us to write a persuasive speech to be presented about Hong Kong’s identity. Key questions: How do we determine a country’s quality of life? What makes a ‘World City’? Is Hong Kong ‘happy’? Play the clip (click on pic) and list all of the aspects of Hong Kong that this advert used to claim it is a World City. These can be used as a starting point for your investigation. (You may need to watch it more than once!)

PREPARING FOR MY INQUIRY WHAT DO I KNOW? Quickwrite: 10 minutes to write down everything you ‘know’ about HK that will help you answer the question about whether Hong Kong is a ‘World City’. Write fast, don’t worry about technical accuracy. Try to fill the page/ box.

WHAT DO I NEED TO KNOW? Check off the information in your Quickwrite against the list created earlier that will give you a good sense of aspects of a country eg.healthcare, crime-rates, ‘Happy Planet Index’ What might I need to investigate to know more…( write in your journal)

BEING A GOOD ‘RESEARCHER’ What are the attributes of a good researcher? What are the ‘places’ we could look for information on Hong Kong? What is the best why to store information and how could we ensure others can use it as well?

GALLERY WALK Each topic has been put onto a piece of chart paper. 1.Create a spider diagram with your responses.Each person will write individually. Before you write something read the paper to ensure that it is a new idea. Record each idea only once. 2.Now rotate to the next table. Read the idea and add your own. Remember- no repeating ideas. 3.Do the same for the third table. Then return to your original table to see what has been added. All of this must be done in COMPLETE SILENCE!

FIND YOUR OWN SOURCES TO LEARN MORE List down possible people, places and sites you can ‘visit’ to learn more about Hong Kong. Once you have been allocated your group and have done the ‘Cubing It’ activity you will know more about what you need to research this week, for next lesson. At home be sure to investigate at least three sources and record your information on a Google doc for next week’s lesson. Make sure one is a ‘Circle of Viewpoint’ perspective to add to the growing wall map.

GROUP WORK Your teacher will allocate your groups. Read ‘Group Work Roles’ and complete the tasks. All group members are responsible for the information found so ensure your notes are accurate, clear and organised. The organiser will ensure the google doc is well-kept.

CUBING IT Create a cube for your group and then each person will consider which task they will start with. It doesn’t matter if more than one student wants to work on the same side. Some are more difficult than others and as a group you must all cover sides except the purple side, which will be done last. You will have some time next lesson as well.

GET TO IT! Spend some time researching, finding out about your ‘Cubing It’ task. When you have learned something, put it into your Google Doc (that your Organisers have set up).

BRIDGING IT ACTIVITY Think about what you knew about Hong Kong at the beginning of the lesson, and now you have learned more. Self-reflect by doing the activity in your journals.
