What has the second witch been busy doing? “killing swine” – killing pigs

What does this suggest about their characters? They enjoy destroying life, being needlessly cruel

The first witch is angry with a woman. Why? She wouldn’t share her chestnuts with her She told her to “get lost” (Aroint thee)

How does she decide to punish her? Torturing her husband who is a sea captain

What is significant about a rat without a tail? It suggest that the rat is a witch in disguise

List the supernatural powers the witches seem to have. They can sail in a sieve They can control the weather They can cast spells

What analytical comments can you make about lines 33 – 38? Sounds like a spell because of rhythm and rhyme scheme Repetition of “thrice” emphasises evil “charm” suggests spell Fact all say together emphasises their power

What is significant about Macbeth’s opening line? Reminds us of the witches “fair is foul and foul is fare” from opening scene of play Macbeth’s first words echo witches’ words, therefore Macbeth immediately associated with them and evil

In your own words … what do the witches look like? Their clothes are ragged and worn out They don’t look like human beings They have chapped fingers They have thin lips They have beards!
