Benito Mussolini Benito Mussolini was  born on July 29, 1883 in Predappio, Italy. In his youth he was a socialist who was considered a bully in his youth.  Mussolini inherited his beliefs from his socialist father. Mussolini rejected socialism in favor of intense nationalism during WWI.  Organized the Fascist Party

Benito Mussolini (cont.) Mussolini could easily persuade others to agree with his ideas so he quickly rose through the ranks of government. Italy's government was corrupt and weak.  The Pope supported Mussolini. Mussolini was hated by the people. Because of constant war and an intense hatred by his people, Mussolini lost his power.

Black Shirts Mussolini had supporters who were combat squads they were called the black shirts because the wore black shirts to emulate an earlier nationalist revolt  the black shirts rejected the democratic process in favor of violent action They broke up socialist rallies They attacked farmers The Italians lost faith in the government constitution and accepted these actions of the black shirts

March on Rome swarming towards the capital tens of thousands of Fascists Fearing civil war king victor Emmanuel the third asked Mussolini to form a government as a prime minister Mussolini entered the city triumphantly

State Control Of Economy To spur economic growth and end conflicts between owners and workers, Mussolini brought the economy under state control.  He also preserved capitalism. Fascist controlled industry, agriculture, and trade. Mussolini favored the upper class with his system. Workers were forbidden to strike, and their wages were kept at a low amount.

Individual and State     The individual was important to the member of the state like men, women, and children. men urged to be ruthless and selfless and fighting for the glory of Italy. women pushed out paying jobs   They taught children how to obey military discipline The next generation soldiers

Totalitarism state Mussolini built the first totalitarism state. one-party dictatorship attempts to regulate every aspect of the lives of its citizens. Stalin and Hitler , followed Mussolini's lead. Mussolini's rule was fascist by nature.

Fascism     Fascism is any centralized, authoritarian government that is not communist. The policies glorify the state over individual and destructive to human rights. Fascism glorified violence and it created loyalty to the state. Fascists are antidemocratic. They emphasized emotion and supremacy of the state.

Fascism's Appeal  Fascism restricts individual freedom so how could the Italians like it? Fascism promises a strong stable government Will end all the political feuding that democracy created Create confidence and strong Nationalism Italy was given praise for their discipline, in using Fascism for their governmental system But later western democracies protested because Mussolini wanted foreign conquest

Fascism vs. Communism Fascist's hated communism and socialism. Fascist's worked for goals of their nation. Unlike Communism; Fascism had greatly defined social classes. Even though Fascism and Communism are different they had a lot in common. Both used leaders with good charismatic abilities to draw people in on the idea. Kept people believing in economic turmoil by promoting extreme programs of social change.
