IMRDC Research Paper

IMRDC Introduction Methodology Results of the Research Discussion Conclusion

INTRODUCTION (1-2 paragraphs) Thesis Question This is the question you will be researching and answering with this research paper. Example: “What has the United Nations done to stop the genocide in Darfur?” Thesis Statement Write 1-2 sentences as an answer to your thesis question.

METHODOLOGY (2-3 paragraphs) How did you collect evidence? Describe in an organized way important steps you took to conduct research. This is the organization of the research process. Example: “I began my research using my textbook. I found that _______________. I then read an article Mrs. Sanders provided. The article included information on ______________. The article had a website which was supposed to have more information, but the webpage url didn’t work.”

Results of the Research (3-4 paragraphs) Here you will explain what you learn about your topic, thesis question, and thesis statement. I expect to see many facts, dates, important names and events, etc. (EVIDENCE) You will need to use parenthetical (parenthesis) or MLA style to CITE YOUR FIVE (5) SOURCES. Please refer to the MLA guide in your English textbook.

DISCUSSION (3 paragraphs) This is where you analyze your results and explain how they support or contradict your thesis statement. Give your opinion of what the research means. You should also discuss the usefulness, reliability (did you trust the sources), accuracy (was the information in the sources true, inaccurate, or mostly opinion?) of your FIVE (5) sources.

CONCLUSION (2 paragraphs) Restate your thesis question and explain how the research you conducted supported your thesis statement. You should also discuss the limitations to your research and what other types of sources you would have found useful. Example: “My research would have been better if I had access to CIA reports, a primary source document written by the leader of a country, etc… because…” If your thesis question relates to an on-going problem, make a Call to Action (describe what students can and should do locally to address your issue).
