WEIGHTED AVERAGE ALG114 Weighted Average: an average where every quantity is assigned a weight. Example: If a teacher thinks it’s more important, a final exam might be weighted twice as much as a regular exam. Sum of Numbers Quantity of Numbers FORMULA FOR AVERAGE: Number (Weight) + Number (Weight), etc. Quantity of Numbers FORMULA FOR WEIGHTED AVERAGE:

WEIGHTED AVERAGE ALG114 Basically, for test scores, multiply the score times the weight and divide by the sum of the weights. It works the same for other weighted items but scores are the best example. Data Set of test scores: 60%, 70%, 80%, 90% Weights: 1, 2, 4, 6 (respectively) 60(1) + 70(2) + 80(4) + 90(6) ==81.54 Number of weights and number of scores. It’s saying there is one 60, two 70s, four 80s, and six 90s.

WEIGHTED AVERAGE ALG114 Ex 1) Data set of test scores: 60%, 70%, 80% Final paper score: 60% Weights: Tests = 20% and Final Paper = 40% YOUR TURN!! Ex 2) Data set of test scores: 70%, 80%, 100% Weights: 1, 5, 7 (respectively)

WEIGHTED AVERAGE ALG114 60(.2) + 70(.2) + 80(.2) + 60(.4) 1.0 =66 NOTE: You can also change all the scores into decimals and get ANSWERS!! Ex 1) Ex 2) 70(1) + 80(5) +100(7) 13 =90
