AUSTRALIA Australia is the largest island in the world. It is the smallest continent in the world, and the sixth largest country in the world. It is also the flattest continent in the world. It is thought that the first humans came to Australia 42,000 to 48,000 years ago. These people crossed on land bridges that have since disappeared or by short sea- crossings. In the 1600’s European sailors began to visit Australia. Europeans began to settle in Australia in the 1700’s. There are now about 22 million people in Australia. About 60% of the people live in five capital cities. (Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, and Adelaide). Australia is a very old country. It has some unique plants and animals. Many of the animals are not found anywhere else. Kangaroos, koalas, emus, platypus, kookaburras, and dingoes only live in Australia. Australia also has the greatest number of reptiles of any country (755 species). It also has the most venomous snakes in the world. Australia is a unique country. PARKVIEW ELEMENTARY - NOVI. Parkview is an Elementary School in Novi. There are 441 students at the school. The classes go from Kindergarten to Grade Four. There are many teachers at our school. The Principal of Parkview is Ms Michos. Fourth Graders, at Parkview, do many interesting things. This year the students had a disability workshop where they learned what it was like to have a disability. Mrs. Dye and Mrs. Garbooshian’s students are epals with Birkenshaw Church of England First and Nursery School. Parkview fourth graders are also members of the B.E.A.R. Club. (Be Excited About Reading). In this club each student reads at least 240 minutes a month. During March Mr. and Mrs. Crawford read to the fourth grade students. Students at Parkview use Everyday Math, which is an interesting way to learn about mathematics and how to use it outside of school. Parkview students also teach adults about how they are learning to write. The school participates in Parents and Kids’ Writing Nights. The sessions are shown on Channel 10.
