 Classroom Norms & Procedures

 This classroom is an environment where we all can learn. For that to happen, we have class norms (or expectations for behavior & routine).  Everything I do is done for a reason. Following the classroom norms will help ensure that we can all do our best.  This is what I expect of you:

 As you enter the classroom, please do the following: o 1. Check the white board for the daily activities & the WARM UP (to be discussed later) o 2. Pick up any worksheets or handouts on the front table for your class (i.e. Futures)

Sit in your assigned seat – 1. Immediately put any homework on the top right corner of your desk (either to be stamped or passed in) – 2. Place any handouts/worksheets you initially picked up during your entry in the middle of your desk ALONG WITH TWO blank sheets of paper & a writing utensil If you need to BORROW a pen or paper, figure it out before class starts No bags/backpacks/purses should be on your desk! Stay in your assigned seat – Let’s practice

Following the SLANT principles will help us get ready for a task quickly & show respect for each other SLANT is an acronym so each letter stands for a word – S: Sit up – L: Listen – A: Ask & answer questions when appropriate – N: Nod your head – T: Track the speakers (i.e. Goalies)

 When we use SLANT, we are attentive to the speaker. If you need to ask a question or would like to add a comment, you should raise your hand & wait to be called on. o Wait time o I choose o Voice (we can’t hear you so please speak louder) o Claps to get your attention … let’s practice!

I understand that at times you will need to use the restroom however remember that I don’t get to use it during class so you need to use discretion & not abuse the policy. – First, you have to ask permission! – We do a lot in the first few minutes of class so do not ask to go in the first 5 minutes. – To prevent class disruptions, if we are in the middle of an activity & you need to use the restroom, hold up your hand & cross your fingers. – My responses are either a head nod (that means yes) or holding up my hand to let you know to wait (i.e. five minutes) – If you abuse the privilege, you may lose it.

Absent Work – If you are absent, you have as many day(s) as you were absent to make up the assignment – If you know you will be gone in advance, let me know as soon as possible to get you the work – Use the website to download assignments – I’m starting to use google classroom too! – me for clarification – Check the class folders Late Work – Homework is due at the beginning of the period on the assigned date – If you don’t have it stamped on time, it is considered late – You receive more credit with a “LATE” stamp than simply turning in the work with your packet – Packets are NOT accepted late for any reason

 First you should… o Check the website and look at my assignment sheet to see what was done that day  Another option is to… o If you’ve checked the above first, you may me to say “I’ve checked the website & I have this – is there anything else I need?”  When I’m back to class… o When it’s convenient, say I’ve been absent the past two days. I’ve checked the assignment sheet, website, folders & gotten these assignments. Is there anything else I’m missing?  Don’t forget to… o Get any homework stamped in a timely manner – this is your responsibility. You may NOT simply write “absent” on your paper or ask for a stamp 2 weeks later.

So that I can easily find information, you need to set up any blank paper assignments as follows: – Top right corner should have (in this order): Your name (first & last) Period # Date – Center of the paper: Title of the assignment (as I specify) – Always number lists when possible – You may use front & back as long as the ink doesn’t bleed through – Pen is preferred but pencil is acceptable

Food – As long as you can actively participate in class, I don’t mind if you have food. Make sure you throw away your trash in the appropriate bin. If it smells, throw it outside Trash – Make sure to clean up your desk &/or work area every day Cell phones/technology – If you must have your phone out, it should be in the top left corner of your desk. You may only use your phone however when I say it’s okay. – If however, phones are out during lectures, presentations or other times when SLANT should be used, I will take it away (No warnings!) – Unless you are doing quiet & independent work, I should not see any earplugs. If I do, I will take your phone or iPod away, no warnings.

 White board  Front table  Technology Center  Markers/Pens/Paper  Class Folders (for absent work)  Desks  Sharing the classroom  Computers > to be discussed later

 By establishing these classroom norms, the expectations for behavior are clear from the beginning. You should know what do to, when, where to go for materials, etc.  This allows us to learn in a positive, safe and encouraging environment about …

 Brief Introduction & Social Media  Technology  Health – Food, Disease & Obesity  The Environment  Globalization  Current Events

 Assessments: 20%  Unit Packets: 30%  Paper/Projects: 30%  Participation: 20%  A: 89.5 – 100%  B: 79.5 – 89.4%  C: 69.5 – 79.4%  D: 59.5 – 69.4%  F: 59.4% and below

 1. Only use your assigned computer each time. o You can find your number on the list behind the computers o Check with me if your numbered computer isn’t working properly  2. Use hand sanitizer first (& dry hands) before computer use  3. Carefully unplug (then re-plug) computers so that they are charged properly & so that we don’t break the charge cords  4. Computers should lay flat on your desk o Do not put computers on top of books, bags, etc. o Do not place other items on top of computers.

 5. No food or drinks near the computers.  6. Do not alter, modify, change, delete any of the standard options on the computer  7. The 3 strikes policy o Your entire class is responsible for putting the computers away properly (in the numbered slot & plugged in to charge) o If your class does not do this, you get a strike. o If the class gets 3 strikes, you will not be allowed to use the computers but you will be responsible for doing the work by hand

 Go to google classroom o Add my class with the code: w32qku  Go to o Add my class with the ID: o Password: Futures2015
