Lab Safety and the Lab Book

Basic Safety Rules Absolutely NO FOOD OR DRINK IN THE LAB!!! Safety goggles MUST be worn at all times. All long hair must be tied back. Wear an apron when in the lab. Rings watches and dangling jewellery should be removed before a lab begins. No open-toed shoes or sandals in the lab. Never taste or eat chemicals in the lab . Always wash your hands with soap before you leave the lab.

Be aware of the location of all safety equipment in the lab. Always work in a clean work area. Always be prepared!!! Always listen to all safety notes that your teacher has specifically mentioned about a lab. Be aware of the location of all safety equipment in the lab. Absolutely no horse-play in the lab. Dispose of all waste as instructed by the teacher.

When accidents happen... Remain Calm!!! Report all accidents - no matter how large or small - to your teacher as soon as possible. Be aware of what is going on around you - DO NOT become part of your neighbour's accident.

The Lab Book Is a bound document. Is written in only blue or black pen. 1st page is a Table of Contents The left side is for rough work and notes. The right side is for lab write-up. Each section should be indented properly. Errors are to be crossed out with a single line. Do not use white-out. Pages should be numbered. Be factual – not personal. Avoid I and We.

Sections for Each Lab Title: Date: Partner: Purpose: To ..... To determine the mass of a sample. Theory: Includes any information that a person would need to know to complete the lab. Materials: List the material from the lab. Procedure: Steps that are taken in the lab. Observations: In point form! List what you observe and see.

Data: Calculations: Discussion: Conclusion: Put in a table. Include any information that was measured. Calculations: Show all calculations Include formulas, sig. figs, and units Discussion: Answer questions if given. Review your results. Conclusion: Restate the purpose and include your results.

What your Lab Book will look like... Title: Enthalpies of Solution and Reaction Date: Partner: Purpose: To determine the molar enthalpy of solution of sodium hydroxide. Theory: Molar enthalpy of solution is the enthalpy associated with 1 mole of a solute dissolving in a solvent. This process may be exothermic or endothermic. When solutions are dilute, coffee-cup calorimetry can be used to determine the enthalpies. Whatever heat the water gains is the enthalpy that the solute releases when dissolving, or whatever heat the water loses is the enthalpy that the solute absorbs when dissolving, ∴ qdissolving = - qwater Molar enthalpy of reaction is the enthalpy associated with the reaction of two substances. When solutions are dilute, qsoln = - qRXN

Materials: - 4.0 g NaOH - 1.0 M HCl - thermometer - water - calorimeter with a cover Procedure: Dissolving NaOH - Measure about 4.0 g of NaOH in a weigh plate. Record mass. - Measure about 100.0 ml of water and place in calorimeter. Record volume. - Record temperature of water in calorimeter. - Add NaOH and cover calorimeter. Stir gently.
