Activity 4 “Ain’t I a Woman?”

Why do you think the speaker uses the word “children”? She wants the audience to view her as a wise mother figure. She has wisdom and knowledge based on her experiences

Describe the speaker’s attitude Truth’s attitude is one of outrage

What do we understand about her character and her life? Truth is physically strong and capable of great endurance Evidence - she doesn’t need to be “lifted over ditches. Evidence – She suffered by not having enough food to eat.

What else do we learn about Sojourner’s Truth in this paragraph? Mother figure is reinforced by having 13 children cruelly taken from her. (The editor of the speech adjusted the number for emotional appeal.) Her call to Jesus shows her pain and isolation and her spirituality.
