Transitions: Islands in the Stream

Transitions in a nutshell Words or phrases used in sentences to LEAD reader through your writing Transitions are about relationships –How does this relate to that? Is it similar? Different? Does it follow that one?

Misconceptions Transitions are not necessarily different from topic sentences –Think of them as TS version 2.0 –They're combined together TS + Transition (But don't have to be)

Think of it this way...

You’re a Travel Agent...

Your Client...

Your Job: Plan the most logical way to get from island to island...

Your Vacation Itinerary

Now apply this to SP...

Think of the arrows as RELATIONSHIPS Why does each island (argument) follow the last? What’s their relationship? A B ?

Transitional Words & Phrases Really comes down to 3 relationships: –Similarity/Dissimilarity [CDs] in the same way, on the other hand, despite, in contrast –Order/Cause & Effect [CDs] at the same time, later, finally, thus, therefore, accordingly, because, –Reminders [CD or CS] as has been said, on the whole

So Where Do They Go? Topic sentences of body pp Concrete detail lead-ins

Practice! 1. Sally is in love with Mark. _______ her best friend feels the same way, which makes their friendship a bit complicated. a) At the same time b) rather c) in brief d) finally 2. Today is a bad day: My socks do not match, my clothes are not clean; ________, I found a dead rat in the kitchen. a)moreover, b) therefore, c) thereby, d) but also

More Practice! 4. Michael practices his drums all day. ________ his hearing is quite weak. a) In conclusion b) As a result c) Simultaneously d) On the other hand

Examples THESIS: Freedom requires people to constantly defend and uphold it in society –Body pp1 TS: Freedom is under threat from people who want to take it away. –Body pp2 TS: Freedom requires people to stand up and fight against those who want to control others. –RELATIONSHIP = Cause & Effect –Body pp2 TS w/ transition: Because Freedom is under constant threat, people must stand and fight against…

Topic Sentence Examples THESIS: The American Dream is not attainable for all citizens, no matter how hard they work for it. –Body pp1 TS: Racism prevents people of different ethnicities from getting a fair chance –Body pp2 TS: Sexism prevents women from getting a fair chance –RELATIONSHIP = Similarity –Body pp2 TS w/ transition: In the same way that racism prevents people of different ethnicities from getting a chance to succeed, sexism also prevents women from getting a fair chance to succeed...

Did You Notice? All of the words & phrases required you to add information from previous paragraphs –It's the Hamburger Helper of writing NOTE: You need to be able to say what your paragraphs are about before you can use the transitions

Some Things to Consider Organization is key –Unorganized = no relationships Topic Sentences –No topic sentence should appear w/out a transition word or phrase* *Except first body pp after intro

Transitions Review Transitions are all about ____________. What are the 3 main types of transitions you will use in your SP? Why are transitions like Hamburger Helper? You should never use Firstly, ______, or ________ in your SP. Which body paragraph(s) would you add a transition phrase in front of: pp#1, pp#2, and/or pp#3?

Assignment Step #1: Highlight all topic sentences Step #2: Look at TS and the TS from the pp before it Step #3: Figure out their relationship Step #4: Revise the TS (not the one from previous pp) Step #4: Repeat!

Practice! Assignment: Choose one of the following prompts. Write 3 topic sentences for 3 potential arguments. The TS for reasons #2 and #3 MUST include the proper transition words/phrases: 1)Who is the best singer/writer/dancer/performer/athlete? 2)What is the best sport for losing weight? 3)What is the best cartoon on television? 4)Which is better, chocolate or vanilla? 5)What is the best kind of music? 6)Who is the greatest person to have ever lived? 7)Which kind of animal makes the best pet? 8)Which is more beautiful, sunrise or sunset? 9)Which is more important, the ability to speak well or write well? 10) Is it better to be an only child or to have brothers and/or sisters?
