PREPARING FOR COLLEGE WHAT TO DO AND WHEN BY KARAN SHAH AND ERIC KARLAN

Standardized Testing What is the PSAT? How will my student be affected by the New SAT and ACT?

PSAT Sophomore year PSAT does not count for anything Sophomores will only be taking the new SAT Why is the PSAT scoring so weird?

SAT or ACT? All colleges look at both equally If tests are required, students take one or the other For some colleges, the options are… SAT and 2 SAT Subject Tests Just the ACT

The ACT Perfect score of 36 No penalty for wrong answers – ALWAYS GUESS! EnglishGrammar MathThrough Algebra 2…and a bit of Trig ReadingReading Passages (NO VOCAB!) ScienceNo actual science – just graphs and charts

ACT Myths East Coast universities and Colleges prefer the SAT over the ACT The ACT is easier than the SAT It’s not possible to prepare for the ACT There are easier and harder ACT exams

The SAT (starting Spring 2016) Perfect score: 1600 (just Reading and Math) No penalty for wrong answers No more vocabulary “Evidence-based” Reading passages and one “Founding Document” Optional Essay Math section with no calculator

What We Still Don’t Know When will the official/accurate scoring tables be released? How will college’s react to the new test? Is this an improved SAT?

Planning for the tests The SAT October, November, December, January, March, May, and June The ACT September, October, December, February, April, June Registration deadlines are a month before the test date

Where do Subject Tests and APs fit in? AP Tests are always in May Take SAT Subject Tests to coincide with APs (or Finals) Study for two tests at the same time!

What is the point? You can earn credits at colleges ‘Brownie points’ on an application SAT Subject Tests sometimes required

How do colleges evaluate scores? Single Highest Test DateSubmit the highest single sitting Used by mostly large, state universities SuperscoreCombine the highest sections across multiple test dates Used by most colleges All scores submittedGenerally the highest ranked colleges

What about this Test-Optional trend? The grades and academic rigor need to be high to replace test scores!

Grades are the most important! Who will college admissions committees favor? A student with mostly A’s, some B’s, and a 1900 A student with some A’s, mostly B’s, and a 2050

Applying to College: Where do I go? Formulating a school list Location Size of School Desired Majors College Visits Spring Break Summer

So what test is better for my student? Check out both! Before starting test prep, check out both

So when should the athlete take the test? When should you have your first test scores? When can coaches first officially contact you? How many times should you take the test? NCAA Eligibility Center
