Aim  The aim of this talk on TRUST:  Uncover some of the mysteries of trust  To create a more human society  To offer some thoughts that are certainly not conclusive but thought provoking  Taking a liberal reformist perspective that is working within the existing social structure

Introduction  Trust is one of the most important challenges the contemporary organisations, irrespective of size, location or product or services have to face. It is the HR and organizational professionals who have to deal with people, deal with people related problems, solve the people related problems and work with the people. But the focus is on HR professional more because of their occupational link with people management. And the basis of all the HR activities is based on trust that may seem common sense but in fact, it is a complex concept. Had it been such common sense, mighty organizations would not have collapsed like the BCCI, Lehman Brothers etc.

What is Trust  A single definition would be desirable; unfortunately, we do not seem to have one at the moment.  Trust is the belief in a set of relationships to achieve favourable results from the trustee. In a trust relation, there are two basic parties: the trustor and trustee. The trustor is the person who is giving the trust to someone. And the trustee is the person who has accepted and taking the responsibility to maintain the trust. Basically, I see trust as a system with inputs, process and outputs leading to trust.

The Trust System  The trust system:  Inputs (limited knowledge, expectation, competence, trustworthiness, integrity, interest, relational, background, role, rational, exchange, history based,trust, role based, rule based trust, distributive justice, procedural justice)  Transformations or conversions (trust initiatives, workshops, ethics, culture, management style, mission, vision, communication)  Outputs which is the desired state of expectation (commitment, performance, loyalty, social capital)  The above triangulation shows how the three elements are related to the creation of t rust. When any of the above elements are ignored, depending on the circumstances, the most likely replacement is: distrust or as some would like to call it breach of trust.

The Trust Model a. The first part is about understanding the business by having structured and unstructured meetings with the top management, management, employees and the community if at all possible in order to establish the trust agenda. The trust agenda is a list of strategic trust related issues that need to be addressed  Stage ‘b’   Once the trust agenda is developed, a trust statement can be developed. The trust statement will be based on the approach to the business.

Conclusion Trust is not a hit and miss issue but an issue of grave significance. The key issue is: we need to restore trust and build trust that will serve an inspirational purpose to attract stakeholders and retain the interest of students of the stakeholders with a long-terms perspective. ‘forewarned is forearmed’
