Josef Sudek By: Echo Woods Period 6

Biography Born March 17, 1896 in Kolín, Bohemia (Czechoslovakia). Died in September 15, Studied book binding. Later studied photography at a graphic school. His work is shown in several museums and books. Josef Sudek Gallery (bottom picture). Best known for his haunting night-scapes of Prague. His style is very dark, a lot of contrast is always present, and they are all emotional. Originally he wanted to become a book binder but in WWI a grenade hit him and he lost his right arm.

Branches

The natural light is coming from behind the branches. The main subject of this photo is the tree limbs because that’s the only thing in the picture. The reason I choose this photo was because I loved how well the sky contrasted with the branches of the tree. The trees give a gloomy feeling to the picture because of how dark they are, which is another really cool thing about it.

Tree

Natural lighting was used and it’s coming form the upper right corner of the screen The main subject of this photo is the tree on the right of the picture because it is in focus and it takes up more than half the photo. My favorite thing about this photo is that you can actually see the fog in the background surrounding each and every tree. Then you have this dark tree up front that isn’t as affect by the fog as the other trees and it just pops because of how dark it is.

Forest

As well as the first two photos the third photo is also lit by natural lighting, which is coming from the upper right half of the photo. The light looks really cool in this photo because it seems to be reflecting off of the fog. The main subject is the forest because of how many trees there are, but besides that there is no particular subject. This is another spooking looking photo that looks really amazing with all the fog in contrast with the dark forest in the background.

St. Vitus Cathedral, Prague. Taken in St. Vitus Cathedral

The lighting used in this photo may be a bit artificial and a bit natural lighting, coming from the left side of the photo. The sun is causing the lighting but it is shining threw a window, but because this picture is black and white you can’t tell if it’s a stain glass window, which is what would make it artificial lighting. The main subject is the dirt pill because it takes about nearly half the picture. I love the wheel barrel standing all by its self on this giant heap of dirt, and then you have the beams of light shining down on it. The lighting gives this picture a sort of heavenly glow.

Taken 1956 Last Roses

The light is natural. It is coming from outside and it’s shining threw the window, which looks really cool with all the condensation on the window. The main subject of this photo is the roses because, the rose stems act like leading lines leading you from the bottom right rule of thirds crossing to the middle of the photo. I think the condensation looks really amazing it helps convey the dark depressing side of things as well as the romantic side with the roses being present.

Clutter

It’s hard to tell what sort of lighting present in this photo, it could be artificial or natural, but I’m guessing it is artificial lighting. The light seems to be coming from either behind the photographer or to the right of the photographer. The main subject is the cluttered desk because it is the most well lit and its right in the middle of the photo, which takes up a third of the picture. The first time I saw this picture I was just awe struck and knew I had to include it in this slide show. I have seen clutter before but nothing like this. Looking at this desk made me wonder, could its owner really find anything on it and what kind of chaotic life they must have. I don’t think even post offices contain that much paper. This picture is truly something else. It’s too bad that there aren’t any more pictures of what this room looks like.
