Lesson 5 MULTIMEDIA

Multimedia on the Web has expanded rapidly as broadband connections have allowed users to connect at faster speeds. Almost all Web sites, including corporate sites, feature multimedia content and interactive objects use multimedia.

 Object-oriented programming is the term for the programming concept in which a program is handled as a collection of individual items that perform separate functions, rather than as a sequence of statements that performs a specific task.

Programming Languages  C++ is the language is considered the best language for creating large applications.  Java is an object-oriented programming language developed by Sun Microsystems that is often used when data needs to be shared across a network.  Java Applet is a miniature Java program that is downloaded into a Web browser when a user requests a Web page.  Java applets and ActiveX allow information to be downloaded and run on your system. These security risk is something you must be aware of when using active content such as Java applets and ActiveX objects.  JavaScript is considered an event-driven scripting language and must reside within HTML documents to run. It is a scripting language that is the Microsoft version of JScript.  Web pages that use ActiveX can include animation, audio and video.  VBScript is a scripting language that is vendor-specific to Microsoft and may not be supported by browsers other than Windows Internet Explorer

HTML5  HTML5’s major goal is to eliminate the use of browser plug-ins.  Why is the acceptance of HTML5 in the Web community a benefit to users of mobile devices? The use of HTML5 can help conserve battery power.

Plug-ins  Plug is a program installed in the browser to extend its basic functionality  Plug-ins retrieve a small portion of a file at a time and deliver enough information to build a continuous stream to data to eliminate transfer delays when files are played from a browser.  There primary goal is to provide efficient integration of multimedia formats with the browser and computer.

Compression  Data Compression is needed to reduce the size of data file transfer on the internet.  Lossless compression is when all the original data can be recovered when the file is decompressed  Lossy Compression is a compression in which some of the information is permanently eliminated.

Plug-in Installation  Offline installation is the plug-in installation that requires the user to download the plug-in file, quit the browser and start the installation file.  Online installation usually occurs with the browser open.

Types of Plug-Ins  Audio and video files are compressed before they are transferred across the Internet to shorten the amount of time required to download them.  Codec is the term for algorithm used by video and audio player plug-ins to compress and decompress files.  Vector graphics produced graphics image files that are small, download quickly, and are easily resized without affecting image quality. These are mathematical statements that describe a series of points to be connected to create an image.  Silverlight= plug-ins that was developed by Microsoft and is a software development tool used to write and run Internet applications.  Quicktime created by Apple Computer for running video and audio files.  QuickTime Virtual Reality (QTVR) is the following products that can be sued to expand a two-dimensional photograph into a three-dimensional environment.

 Add-ons are extensions and plug- ins used to extend the functionality of the Firefox Web browser.  Viewer= an application used to retrieve a file when the program needed to open the file type is not installed on your computer.  Portable Document Format (PDF) retains formatting information through all platforms and downloads quickly from the Web

 An element on a Web page that contains data and procedures for how that item will react when activated.  PS is the following graphics file formats that is written in a page description language that is unreadable, and can be printed only on a specific type of printer.  Most browsers are able to save all images, fonts and scripts referenced by the HTML on a page.  Copyright law protects original works of authorship online as well as in print.
