Ch. 2.2 Mixtures
Classifying Mixtures Mixture—a physical blend of two or more components. Mixtures are classified as either heterogeneous or homogeneous, depending on the distribution of their components.
Heterogeneous Mixture A mixture in which the distribution is not uniform throughout.
Homogeneous Mixture A mixture in which the composition is uniform throughout. Phase—any part of a mixture with uniform composition and properties. Heterogeneous mixtures have two or more phases; homogeneous mixtures have just one.
Separating Mixtures Differences in physical properties can be used to separate mixtures. Filtration—the process that separates solids from the liquid in a heterogeneous mixture. Distillation—process used to separate substances that are dissolved in a liquid.
