1904 Pablo Neruda was born on July 12, 1904 Pablo Neruda was born Neftalí Ricardo Reyes Basoalto in Parral, a small town in central Chile. His father, don José del Carmen Reyes Morales, was a poor railway worker. Rosa Basoalto de Reyes, Neruda's mother, was a schoolteacher, who died of tuberculosis when Neruda was an infant.

1916 At the age of 12 he met the Chilean poet Gabriela Mistral, who encouraged his literary efforts. The American poet Walt Whitman was a major influence to his work. Neruda kept Whitman’s portrait on his beside table because he was so inspired by him.

1919 Neruda publishes thirteen poems in "Corre- Vuela" and collaborates in "Selva Oscura". He participates in several poetry competitions. Pablo Neruda was wrote a wide variety of poems.

B ETWEEN The government put him in charge of a number of honorary consulships, which took him to Burma, Ceylon, Java, Singapore, Buenos Aires, Barcelona, and Madrid. 1930 Pablo Neruda was married for the first time, but his marriage was unhappy. A few years later he left his wife to go live with Delia del Carril, who he stayed with until He had one child who died of down syndrome. ve_children

1946 In 1946, Neftalí Ricardo Reyes Basoalto adopted the pseudonym Pablo Neruda. He used it for 20 years before legally adopting it. Pablo Neruda is one of the most widely read of the Spanish American poets.
