Parts of my Chassis 12/10/10

An axle makes the wheels on my car move. The axle also holds the wheels in the correct position. The axles of a vehicle help hold all of the weight of a car. As well as holding the weight of the car the axles control the acceleration and braking of a vehicle. There are many different types of axles available for different vehicles. My Axles

Friction Motor Many toys today use friction motors to help them move. They are used because they are cheap and they do a very good job. Connected to our friction motors is a driven axle. The gears in the friction motor move together to make the axles turn. The driven axle is moved by our friction motor. This is what makes the car move. The friction motor will make the car move once it has been pulled back. When it is let go the car will move forward, the distance it moves depends on the friction motor.

Pop Riveting Pop riveting is used to join thin pieces of metal and plastic. A pop rivet has 2 parts, the pin and the rivet. The pliers pull the pin through the rivet and this makes the rivet pop and it joins the material. Pop riveting is used when the joint does not have to be very strong. It is used a lot with aluminium.

Pop Riveting There are 3 main stages for pop riveting. 1. A hole, slightly bigger than the rivet must be drilled in both of the materials to be joined. 2. You then pass the pop rivet through both of the pieces of material to be joined. 3. You then push the rivet pliers on to the pin of the rivet. You close the pliers again and again until the rivet pops. The pin will break off leaving a permanent fixing, that joins the material together.

Questions:- Copy the questions into your book and answer them. 1. What does an axle do? 2. What mechanism makes our car move? 3. What type of axle is on the back of our cars? 4. What is pop riveting? 5. What are the 2 parts of the pop rivet? 6. Briefly explain the 3 stages of pop riveting in your own words?
