1.7 Graph Linear Functions No School: Monday Quiz: 1/22/10 Unit 1 Test: 1/27/10

Vocabulary:  You have seen linear functions written in the form y = mx + b. By naming a function f, you can write it using function notation: f(x) = mx + b f(x) means that you have “x” in the equation. f(x) is just another way to write y =

Vocabulary:  A family of functions is a group of functions with similar characteristics.  The most basic linear function family of all linear functions is called the parent linear function and has the following form: f(x) = x.

Example 1:  Graph the function g(x) = x + 1. Compare the graph with the graph of f(x) = x.

Example 2:  Graph the function h(x) = 2x. Compare the graph with the graph of f(x) = x.

Example 3:  Graph the functions. Compare the graphs. g(x) = x + 2 and h(x) = -x + 2

Example 4: Standardized Test Practice  What is the value of the function f(x) = -2x – 7 when x = -2? a)-11 b)-3 c)3 d)11

Your Turn:  Evaluate the function for the given value of x: 1.f(x) = 0.3x – 1.2; x=7 2.f(x) = -2/5x + 1/10; x=4

Example 5:  For the function f(x) = -3x + 2, find the value of x so that f(x) = -13 f(x) = -3x + 2 f(x) = -13 f(x) = f(x) -3x + 2 = -13

Your Turn:  Find the value of x so that the function has the given value: 1.g(x) = -1/2x – 3; g(x) = 4 2.h(x) = 5x – 3; h(x) = -13

Homework:  P #2-40Evens  Correct your quiz (on a separate sheet of paper)
