Should Women Compete With Men? Austin Overmann

Key Terms Gender Equality – The equal representation of Men and Women. Implying that they are of equal value and deserve equal treatment Stereotype – To believe that all people or things with a particular characteristic are the same Gender Gap – A disproportionate difference between Men and Women

My Personal View

Real Life Examples

Why They Shouldn’t Women who have played against men don’t believe it is realistic Women aren’t as physically strong as men (“Women are 66% as strong as Men”) The Gender Gaps have stabilized (no gender is progressing faster than the other) Religion would prevent some males from competing

What Factor Does Religion Have? Religion preaches having a lot of respect for women and some people believe physical competition jeopardizes that Joel Northrup, Iowa High School Wrestler Paige Sultzbach, Arizona High School Baseball player

It’s Possible for Women to Succeed Nancy Lieberman played for the Los Angeles Lakers Summer League team as well as the Utah Jazz. Danica Patrick – Professional NASCAR Driver Margaret Thompson Murdock – Former Olympic Shooter TCU Shooting team – All Girls Collegiate Shooting team

Can Co-Ed Youth Sports Help? Youth sports are becoming privatized and kids are being specialized so youth co-ed sports aren’t as common as they used to be Pro’s: o Mutual Respect - By playing together at a young age, it will help teach children to be respectful of both genders. o Confidence and Cooperation - Cooperating with one another will help kids develop ways of learning from each other Cons’: o Skill Level - Boy’s end up getting taller and stronger than the girls, which could prove to be detrimental to the development of their skills o Comfortability - Boys might fear for being too aggressive with the girls
