BE WORKING ON SOMETHING QUIETLY! Study Hall: sit in assigned seats

Warm Up Would you ever want to travel to the moon? Explain what you think you might see. Use complete sentences.

Volunteers ? Who wants to share?

Quiz: 1 st Block only Clear off your desks Eliminate answer choices, make your best educated guess if you are unsure…. Check over all your answers and make sure you answered every question! YOU MAY WRITE ON THE TEST 25 Minutes for Quiz

Quiz Results and Tracking You will receive your quiz back along with your tracking sheet Add quiz results to your tracking sheet: Objective: 6.E.1.2 Earth and the Solar System Write in your score and color in the appropriate number of boxes

Think About this…. What is the only object in space man has traveled to and landed on? The Earth’s Moon The Earth’s Moon: 1 st object of space exploration

Write in Notebook The Earth’s Moon: The only object in our solar system to be visited by humans!

Write in Notebook The Apollo program (Project Apollo) 3 rd space program of NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration) Responsible for landing the first humans on the moon in 1969

Write in Notebook Waxing: increases in size

Write in notebook Waning: decreases in size

Foldable of Moon Phases Follow along as we fold our paper 1: Fold paper in so your “door’s close” 2. Fold hamburger 3. Fold hamburger 4. Open up and you should have 8 individual boxes 5. Number your boxes: follow teacher example

Foldable Activity You will rotate around the classroom to record information for all 8 phases You will count off from 1 – 8 You will start in the station that matches the number you counted off You will rotate when I blow the whistle

New Moon – Phase 1 The side of the moon that is facing the Earth is not lit up by the sun. At this time the moon is not visible. (we can not see it in the sky)

Waxing Crescent –Phase 2 A small part (less than 1/2) of the moon is lit up at this point. The part that is lit up is slowly getting bigger.

First Quarter – Phase 3 One half of the moon is lit up by the sun at this point. The part that is lit up is slowly getting bigger.

Waxing Gibbous – Phase 4 At this time over half of the moon is lit up. The part that is lit is slowly getting bigger.

Full Moon – Phase 5 The side of the moon that is lit up by the sun is facing the Earth. The entire moon is lit up at this point.

Waning Gibbous – Phase 6 The moon is now not lit up all the way by sunlight. The part of the moon that is lit is slowly getting smaller.

Last Quarter – Phase 7 Half of the moon is lit up by the sun. The part that we can see lit up is getting smaller.

Waning Crescent – Phase 8 A small part of the moon is lit up at this point. It is getting smaller each day until we can no longer see it (New Moon Again!) The cycle keeps repeating

Moon Journal Now that you know the 8 phases of the moon…. Label your moon journal with the correct phases for the different days of the month

Who remembers the different types of Tides? When the sun and moon are aligned, there are exceptionally strong gravitational forces, causing very high and very low tides which are called _______ tides, though they have nothing to do with the season. When the sun and moon are not aligned, the gravitational forces cancel each other out, and the tides are not as dramatically high and low. These are called _______ tides.
