What is Tutorial? “Each learner has an entitlement to appropriate support and guidance from application and enrolment to their time of leaving”. “The main purpose of tutorials is to enhance the learners’ learning experience and enable the learner to identify and achieve their learning goals.”

In 2003, the Government published a green paper called Every Child Matters. This was published alongside the report into the death of Victoria Climbié, the young girl who was horrifically abused and tortured by her Aunt and man with whom they lived. The green paper prompted a huge debate about services for children, young people and families. There was a wide consultation with people working in children's services, and with parents, children and young people. Following the consultation, the Government published Every Child Matters: the Next Steps, and passed the Children Act 2004, providing the laws for developing more effective and accessible services focused around the needs of children, young people and families. The Every Child Matters green paper identified the five outcomes that are most important to children and young people:

Being Healthy Staying Safe Enjoying & Achieving Making a Positive Contribution Achieving Economic Wellbeing Sexual Health Placement Preparation Raising Money for Charity Target /Goal Setting CV/ Job Letter Writing Drugs and Alcohol Awareness Bullying Road Safety Time Management Domestic Violence Motivation/ Self esteem Discuss own ideas for lessons/any problems The Law/ Antisocial behaviour

“You can't touch it, but it affects how you feel. You can't see it, but it's there when you look at yourself in the mirror. You can't hear it, but it's there every time you talk about yourself. What is this important but mysterious thing?”

Lesson Objectives! Name some of the topics that will be covered during tutorial lessons and link to the correct ECM outcomes. Gain a brief knowledge of the ECMA and its importance. Describe what self esteem is and list ways it can be improved. Name factors that can affect a person’s self esteem and give reasons for these e.g. body image-scars, weight issues. Understand the term ‘role model’ and reflect on how one’s own self esteem can affect children’s emotional wellbeing.

What is self esteem? “ Respect for or a favourable opinion of oneself “
